Il nuovo Papa Francesco I, Cardinale Jorge Mario Bergoglio, arcivescovo di Buenos Aires, presidente dei vescovi argentini.
Dopo avere appreso l’elezione di un nuovo Papa, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama non ha perso tempo inviandogli una lettera per esprimere le sue congratulazioni. “Possa io offrirle il mio saluto ed il senso di gioia per la sua storica elezione come Papa”.
Riconoscendo la scelta storica del nome del nuovo pontefice, ha scritto: “Anche se non sono molto familiare con molti santi cattolici, conosco San Francesco, avendo visitato Assisi e partecipato ad incontri inter-religiosi proprio in questa città. La sua disciplina, la semplicità del suo stile di vita e il suo amore per tutte le creature sono qualità che trovo profondamente stimolanti. Sono commosso nel sapere che il suo nome è quello che avete scelto per il vostro papato.”
Ricordando i suoi incontri cordiali con il Papa Paolo VI, Giovanni Paolo II e Benedetto XVI e altri fratelli e sorelle cristiani, Sua Santità ha auspicato di incontrare il nuovo capo della Chiesa Cattolica Romana: “Sono stato molto contento di aver conosciuto ed apprezzato conversazioni amichevoli con i suoi predecessori immediati e, negli ultimi 40 anni o giù di lì, ho partecipato a scambi fruttuosi con i miei fratelli e sorelle cristiani. Spero che possa avere l’onore di essere interpellato in alcune occasioni anche da Lei nel prossimo futuro. “
His Holiness the Dalai Lama Congratulates the New Pope

Apprised of the election of a new Pope this morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama lost no time in writing to him to express his congratulations.
“May I offer you my greetings and sense of joy on your historic election as the Pope.”
Acknowledging the new pontiff’s historic choice of name, he wrote:
“Although I am not very familiar with many Catholic saints, I do know about St Francis, having visited Assisi and attended inter-religious gatherings there. His discipline, the simplicity of his way of life and his love for all creatures are qualities that I find deeply inspiring. I am moved to know that his is the name you have chosen for your papacy.”
Recalling his cordial meetings with Pope Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI and other Christian brothers and sisters, His Holiness looked forward to meeting the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church: “ I am very pleased to have met and enjoyed friendly conversations with your immediate predecessors and, for the last forty years or so, have participated in fruitful exchanges with my Christian brothers and sisters. I hope that I may have the honour of calling on you too sometime in the near future.”
