Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Dobbiamo cercare le ragioni alla base dell’insegnamento. Non possiamo basarci soltanto sulle parole dei trattati classici, dobbiamo trasformare il loro significato in un’esperienza viva.

3 gennaio 2024. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Questa mattina, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è stato invitato a presiedere alla convocazione dell’Università Gelukpa ed all’assegnazione dei diplomi di Gheshé Lharampa ai Gheshé che si sono laureati negli ultimi quattro anni. Sua Santità è stato accolto all’ingresso del Kalachakra Ground dagli abati delle grandi sedi monastiche della conoscenza nel sud dell’India – Ganden, Drepung e Sera – che lo scortarono sul palco. Sua Santità sedeva al centro con Ganden Tri Rinpoché alla sua destra e Jangtsé Chöjé Rinpoché alla sua sinistra.

I lavori si sono aperti con un verso di omaggio al Buddha:

Rendo omaggio al capo del clan Shakya,
che nacque nel lignaggio Shakya per compassione e mezzi abili,
che era invincibile e sconfisse le forze degli esseri malvagi
ed il cui corpo era come una maestosa montagna dorata.

Il moderatore per l’occasione, Geshé Tulku Tenzin Sherab, ha dato il benvenuto sul palco a Sua Santità, così come ad altri ospiti e dignitari. Ha spiegato che dopo l’aggressione del 1959 che distrusse gran parte della tradizione buddista in Tibet, molti tibetani sono riusciti a raggiungere l’India grazie alle benedizioni di Sua Santità. I monaci si riunirono in un accampamento a Buxaduar, dove, sotto la guida di Sua Santità e dei suoi due tutori, fu istituita una commissione d’esame di Geshé Lharam. Intanto i monaci appartenenti alle tre grandi Università Monastiche mantenevano vive le loro tradizioni di studi. Il moderatore ha dichiarato che non può essere ripagata la gentilezza di Sua Santità nel condurre ed ispirare tutto questo.

Nel 1970 fu istituita una commissione d’esame Gelukpa, composta da abati e funzionari d’esame, che stabilirono procedure e regole. Da allora si sono diplomati più di 1.000 Geshé. Molti di loro servono il Dharma in diverse parti del mondo.

Ganden Tri Rinpoché è stato quindi invitato a parlare: “Il custode del Buddhadharma, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama, è oggi qui con noi, mentre ci riuniamo per celebrare la Convocazione dell’Università Gelukpa e la cerimonia di assegnazione dei diplomi. Coloro che oggi si laureano hanno studiato a fondo, hanno esercitato la logica ed il dibattito e si sono presentati agli esami. Di conseguenza, riceveranno i diplomi Lharampa. Come ha consigliato Jé Rinpoché, dobbiamo studiare, riflettere ed integrare ciò che abbiamo imparato interiormente.

“Una volta conseguito il titolo di Geshé, è consuetudine entrare nel Collegio Tantrico di Gyudmé o Gyudtö per studiare i quattro commentari intrecciati di Guhyasamaja https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=11213. Questa è una tradizione che è stata tramandata ininterrottamente dai tempi di Jé Rinpoché https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=11772. Ci sono altri testi da memorizzare per i Geshé neolaureati, ma ciò che è particolarmente importante è poter trasmettere la lettura del commentario di Guhyasamaja https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=891. Invito tutti voi a impegnarvi in questo senso. Come diceva Serkhong Tsenshab Rinpoché, è essenziale mantenere viva questa tradizione.

January 3, 2024. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – This morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was invited to preside over the Gelukpa University Convocation and the award of Geshé Lharampa degrees to Geshés who had graduated over the last four years. He was met at the gate to the Kalachakra Ground by abbots of the great monastic seats of learning in south India—Ganden, Drepung and Sera—who escorted him to the stage. His Holiness sat in the middle with Ganden Tri Rinpoché to his right and Jangtsé Chöjé Rinpoché to his left.

Proceedings opened with a verse of homage to the Buddha:

I pay homage to the Chief of Shakya clan,
Who took birth in the Shakya lineage out of compassion and skilful means,
Who was invincible and defeated the forces of evil beings
And whose body was like a majestic golden mountain.

Moderator for the occasion, Geshé Tulku Tenzin Sherab, welcomed His Holiness, as well as other guests and dignitaries, to the stage. He explained that after the onslaught in 1959 that destroyed much of the Buddhist tradition in Tibet, many Tibetans we able to reach India due to the blessings of His Holiness. Monastics congregated in a camp in Buxaduar, where, under the guidance of His Holiness and his two tutors, a Geshé Lharam examination board was set up. Meanwhile, monks belonging to the three great Monastic Universities kept their traditions of study alive. The moderator declared that the kindness of His Holiness in leading and inspiring all this cannot be repaid.

In 1970, a Gelukpa Examination Board was established, comprising abbots and examination officers, who laid out procedures and rules. Since then, more than 1000 Geshés have graduated. Many of them are serving the Dharma in different parts of the world.

Ganden Tri Rinpoché was invited to speak: “The custodian of the Buddhadharma, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, is with us here today, as we gather to celebrate the Gelukpa University Convocation and the ceremony for awarding degrees. Those graduating today have studied thoroughly, exercised logic and debate and appeared for their exams. As a result, they will receive their Lharampa degrees. As Jé Rinpoché has advised, we must study, reflect and integrate what we’ve learned within.

“Once you have earned your Geshé degree, it’s customary to enter either Gyudmé or Gyudtö Tantric College to study the four interwoven commentaries of Guhyasamaja. This is a tradition that has been passed down without a break from the time of Jé Rinpoché. There are other texts to be memorized by newly graduated Geshés, but what is particularly important is to be able to pass on the reading transmission of the Guhyasamaja commentary. I urge you all to put effort into this. As Serkhong Tsenshab Rinpoché used to say, it is essential to keep this tradition alive.

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Non bisogna creare divisioni sulla base del ‘noi’ e del ‘loro’, bisogna vivere insieme in pace. Le differenze nel colore della nostra pelle o nella fede che seguiamo hanno un significato secondario rispetto al nostro essere uguali in quanto esseri umani. Quando nasciamo non siamo divisi sulla base di etichette nazionali o religiose.”

1 gennaio 2024. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Questa mattina, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha lasciato Gaden Phelgyeling per il Kalachakra Teaching Ground per partecipare ad una cerimonia di offerte e preghiere per la sua lunga vita richiesta dall’Istituto Centrale di Studi Tibetani, Sarnath, e dai suoi ex studenti, e persone appartenenti all’insediamento tibetano di Paonta Sahib. Aprivano la strada i monaci dai cappelli gialli con cresta che suonavano i corni. In alto sventolava un ombrello dorato. Sua Santità ha sorriso ed ha salutato i sostenitori lungo il percorso.

Dalla piattaforma sorrise e salutò nuovamente la folla e molti di loro ricambiarono il saluto. Salutò gli illustri Lama, salutò l’immagine del Buddha circondato dai Diciassette Maestri di Nalanda https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=9200 in un grande thangka dietro il trono e prese posto.

La cerimonia, guidata dal maestro del canto del monastero di Namgyal e presieduta da Ganden Tri Rinpoché, si è aperta con un saluto al Buddha, “il sottomesso al mondo”. Successivamente è seguita la recitazione di “Nuvole di benedizioni d’ambrosia”, l’invocazione di Trulshik Rinpoché sulla serie di incarnazioni di Avalokiteshvara in Tibet. Le preghiere di lunga vita si concentravano su Tara Bianca.

Ad un certo punto Ganden Tri Rinpoché si fece avanti per offrire a Sua Santità la bacchetta di lunga vita, che accettò. È stata recitata una Preghiera in Sette Rami https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=11265 e una grande torta rituale è stata offerta a Sua Santità, che ne ha assunto una porzione simbolica. Il maestro del canto ha porto un’offerta completa del mandala.

Successivamente, Tri Rinpoché ha offerto rappresentazioni del corpo, della parola e della mente dei Buddha, del vaso, dei simboli [dei Buddha] delle Cinque Nobili Famiglie, dei Sette Emblemi Reali, degli Otto Simboli di Buon Auspicio, delle Otto Sostanze di Buon Auspicio e così via. Via. Mentre ciò accadeva, un corteo di persone appartenenti alle organizzazioni patronali passava davanti alla piattaforma portando una serie di doni che comprendevano per lo più volumi di Scritture. Alcuni di questi erano libri che sono stati recentemente tradotti dal pali e dal sanscrito in tibetano.

Ganden Tri Rinpoché, Jangtsé Chöjé Rinpoché e Sakya Gongma Rinpoché seguiti dai rappresentanti delle organizzazioni patronali si sono avvicinati al trono per rendere omaggio. Sua Santità ha donato a ciascuno una sciarpa di seta bianca ed un nastro di protezione rosso.

Dopo il canto di una preghiera per la lunga vita di Sua Santità da parte dei suoi due tutor ed un’altra da parte di Jamyang Khyentsé Chökyi Lodrö, Sua Santità si è rivolto ai presenti.

“Oggi, ciò che desidero dire ai miei fratelli e sorelle del Dharma, monaci, monache e laici, persone interessate all’insegnamento del Buddha, che si sono riuniti in questo luogo sacro di Vajra-asana, la sede dell’illuminazione, e offerto questa cerimonia per la mia lunga vita, è che quando mi guardo indietro, gioisco di ciò che ho potuto fare nel mondo. 01.01.2024 Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – This morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama left Gaden Phelgyeling for the Kalachakra Teaching Ground to attend a ceremony of offerings and prayers for his long life requested by the Central Institute of Tibetan Studies, Sarnath, and its alumni, and people belonging to the Tibetan settlement at Paonta Sahib. Monks wearing crested yellow hats and playing horns led the way. A golden umbrella fluttered overhead. His Holiness smiled and waved to well-wishers lining the route.

From the platform he smiled and waved again to the crowd and many among them waved back. He greeted the distinguished Lamas, saluted the image of the Buddha surrounded by the seventeen masters of Nalanda in a large thangka behind the throne and took his seat.

The ceremony, led by the Chant-master of Namgyal Monastery and presided over by Ganden Tri Rinpoché, opened with a salutation to the Buddha, ‘the Subduer of the world’. Next came a recitation of ‘Clouds of Ambrosial Blessings’, Trulshik Rinpoché’s invocation of the series of incarnations of Avalokiteshvara in Tibet. The long-life prayers focussed on White Tara.

At a certain point Ganden Tri Rinpoché came forward to present His Holiness with the long-life wand, which he accepted. A seven-limb prayer was chanted, and a large ritual cake was presented to His Holiness, who took a token portion. The Chant-master made a full mandala offering. Read the rest of this entry »
