31 dicembre 2023. In occasione del nuovo anno, desidero ringraziare tutti coloro che mi hanno inviato gli auguri, e porgo il mio saluto a tutti voi, fratelli e sorelle del mondo.

Nonostante le numerose sfide che stiamo affrontando oggi, sono ottimista sul fatto che, con un crescente apprezzamento di quanto siamo tutti interconnessi nell’unità dell’umanità, possiamo tutti lavorare per condurre vite più significative e creare un mondo migliore.

Come esseri umani condividiamo il desiderio comune di essere felici e liberi dalla sofferenza. Siamo animali sociali che dipendono dagli altri per sopravvivere. Pertanto, come dico spesso, dovremmo lavorare per il bene degli altri. Se non possiamo aiutarli, dovremmo almeno assicurarci di non arrecare loro alcun danno. Ho scoperto che aiutare gli altri è il modo migliore per garantire felicità e tranquillità a noi stessi.

Credo anche fermamente che possiamo trovare la pace nel mondo solo quando troviamo la pace dentro di noi. Ogni essere umano ha il potenziale per coltivare la pace interiore e, così facendo, contribuire alla pace della nostra comunità globale.

Dobbiamo cercare di coltivare la compassione e la pace interiore, indipendentemente dalla nostra nazionalità o religione, possiamo contribuire al benessere e alla felicità di tutta l’umanità. Se il secolo scorso è stato il secolo della violenza, è nostra responsabilità fare di questo secolo il secolo del dialogo.

Ancora una volta rivolgo a tutti voi un caro saluto. Spero che tutti voi godiate di un inizio propizio per il nuovo anno, 2024.

December 31, 2023. On the occasion of the New Year, I would like to thank everyone who has sent me good wishes, and I offer my greetings to you all, brothers and sisters across the world.

Despite the many challenges that we are facing today, I feel optimistic that with a growing appreciation of how interconnected we all are in the oneness of humanity, we can all work to lead more meaningful lives and create a better world.

As human beings we share a common wish to be happy and free from pain. We are social animals who depend on others to survive. Therefore, as I often say, we should work for the benefit of others. If we cannot help them, we should at least make sure we do no harm. I have found that helping others is the best way of ensuring happiness and calm for ourselves.

I also firmly believe that we can find peace in the world only when we find peace within. Every human being has the potential to cultivate inner peace, and by so doing to contribute to the peace of our global community.

We must try to cultivate compassion and inner peace, regardless of our nationality or religion, we can contribute to the well-being and happiness of all mankind. If the last century was the century of violence, it is our responsibility to make this century the century of dialogue.

Once again, I extend warm greetings to you all. I hope that you all enjoy an auspicious beginning to the new year, 2024.

Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Questa mattina, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama, giunto al Kalachakra Ground, dove avrebbe conferito gli insegnamenti, ha salutato la folla e la statua del Buddha dietro il trono, quindi gli eminenti Lama e ha preso posto. Un quadruplice gruppo di taiwanesi – monaci, monache, laiche e laici – sedeva davanti a lui cantando il “Sutra del cuore” https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=6098 in mandarino. È seguita una seconda recitazione dello stesso testo in tibetano, al che furono serviti tè e pane.

“Per conferire il permesso a Manjushri questa mattina”, ha annunciato Sua Santità, “devo fare alcune pratiche preparatorie. Mentre lo faccio, per favore recitate il mantra Om ara patsa na dhih.

“Il Buddha, come una maestosa montagna dotata di tutte le qualità, divenne tale in seguito all’accumulo di meriti e saggezza per tre innumerevoli eoni. Raggiunse la Buddità sotto l’albero della Bodhi qui vicino. Era un maestro che rivelò la verità ed il percorso per raggiungerla così come lo sono.

“Quando diciamo che “Prendo rifugio nel Buddha”, riconosciamo la possibilità di superare tutte le contaminazioni, ottenendo la loro vera cessazione. Quando il Buddha ci disse: “Tu sei il maestro di te stesso”, intendeva dire che dobbiamo praticare. La sua potente affermazione ci dice che il futuro è nelle nostre mani. Non è che qualcun altro possa o debba esercitare per nostro conto. Giriamo attraverso il ciclo dell’esistenza perché le nostre menti sono indisciplinate. Esistono antidoti alla sofferenza ed alle sue cause. Applicandoli possiamo realizzare una mente purificata, e questo è qualcosa di cui essere orgogliosi.

“Appena mi sveglio al mattino, recito la presa di rifugio e la generazione della mente del risveglio, che mi dà la forza di lavorare per gli altri. Quindi, proprio come faccio della coltivazione di bodhicitta la mia pratica principale, anche voi, miei fratelli e sorelle di Dharma, dovreste fare lo stesso. Vi porterà tranquillità e benessere fisico. Questo è quello che dico:

Avendo generato lo spirito della suprema illuminazione

Invito tutti gli esseri senzienti come miei ospiti a questa occasione festosa di ausilio temporaneo per l’obiettivo finale dell’illuminazione.

December 31, 2023. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – This morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived at the Kalachakra Teaching Ground, waved to the crowd, saluted the statue of the Buddha behind the throne, greeted eminent Lamas, and took his seat. A four-fold gathering of Taiwanese— monks, nuns, laywomen and laymen—sat before him and chanted the ‘Heart Sutra’ in Mandarin. There followed a second recitation of the same text in Tibetan. Tea and bread were served.

“In order to give the permission of Manjushri this morning,” His Holiness announced, “I have to do some preparatory practices. While I do so, please recite the mantra Om ara patsa na dhih.

“The Buddha, like a majestic mountain possessed of all qualities, became a Buddha as a result of accumulating merit and wisdom for three countless aeons. He attained Buddhahood beneath the Bodhi Tree near here. He was a teacher who revealed the truth and the path to it as they are.

“When we say I take refuge in the Buddha, we acknowledge the possibility of overcoming all defilements—attaining their true cessation. When the Buddha told us, ‘You are your own master’, he meant that we must practise. His powerful statement tells us that the future is in our hands. It’s not that anyone else can or should practise on our behalf. We spin through the cycle of existence because our minds are unruly. There are antidotes to suffering and its causes. By applying them we can actualize a purified mind, and that’s something to be proud of.

“As soon as I wake in the morning, I recite the verse for taking refuge and generating the awakening mind, which gives me strength to work for others. So, just as I make the cultivation of bodhichitta my main practice, you, my Dharma brothers and sisters should do so too. It will bring you peace of mind and physical well-being. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “È perché ricordo la vacuità e la coltivazione della mente del risveglio di bodhicitta, dal momento in cui ogni mattina mi sveglio, che mi sento rilassato ed a mio agio. Per favore, tenetelo a mente.

30 dicembre 2023. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Questa mattina le persone lungo la strada che dal monastero tibetano conduce al Kalachakra Ground, il luogo d’insegnamento, erano ansiose d’intravedere Sua Santità il Dalai Lama mentre passava, che contraccambiava con sorrise di gioia, sorridendo e salutando la folla del palco prima di voltarsi per salutare gli eminenti Lama seduti attorno al trono.

Non appena Sua Santità ha preso posto, un gruppo di otto ragazze indiane, studentesse della Root Institute School qui a Bodhgaya, con due dei loro insegnanti, si sono seduti davanti a lui ed hanno deliziato l’assemblea cantando il “Sutra del Cuore” https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=6098 in un sanscrito impeccabile. Lo stesso sutra è stato poi recitato nuovamente in tibetano, seguito dai versi di saluto tratti dall’“Ornamento per la Chiara Realizzazione” e dalla “Saggezza Fondamentale https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=9194 della Via di Mezzo” di Nagarjuna https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=10906.

“Oggi, in questo luogo molto speciale, Vajra-asana, la sede dell’illuminazione”, ha osservato Sua Santità, “persone si sono riunite da molti paesi diversi ed hanno l’opportunità di pregare. Tutti gli esseri senzienti sono uguali nel non volere la minima sofferenza e, soprattutto nel caso degli esseri umani, nel cercare la gioia.

“Come esseri umani abbiamo la capacità di cercare metodi affidabili per superare la sofferenza e generare felicità. Tuttavia, troppo spesso guardiamo le cose da un punto di vista ristretto e finiamo solo per renderci infelici. Perdiamo la strada alla ricerca di gratificazioni a breve termine.

“Nessun’altra creatura è paragonabile agli esseri umani che, pur essendo intelligenti, creano sofferenza a se stessi ed agli altri. Abbiamo visto gli orrori della prima e della seconda guerra mondiale eppure c’è chi vorrebbe che ci preparassimo per la terza. Investiamo energia e risorse nella costruzione di armi sofisticate il cui unico scopo è la distruzione.

“Dobbiamo essere consapevoli degli errori che abbiamo commesso ed impegnarci invece in pratiche che creeranno felicità e ridurranno la sofferenza per tutti. Dobbiamo lavorare per evitare la guerra e rinunciare all’uso delle armi. Non dovremmo più pensare in termini di vittoria completa per noi stessi e di abietta sconfitta dei nostri avversari. December 30, 2023. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – People lining the road from the Tibetan Monastery to the Kalachakra Teaching Ground were eager to catch a glimpse of His Holiness the Dalai Lama as he passed this morning. He beamed with joy in return. From the front of the stage he again smiled and waved to the crowd before turning to greet the eminent Lamas seated around the throne.

As soon as His Holiness was seated, a group of eight Indian girls, students at the Root Institute School here in Bodhgaya, with two of their teachers, sat down before him and delighted the assembly by chanting the ‘Heart Sutra’ in impeccable Sanskrit. The same sutra was then recited again in Tibetan, followed by the verses of salutation from the ‘Ornament for Clear Realization’ and Nagarjuna’s ‘Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way’.

“Today, in this very special place, Vajra-asana, the seat of enlightenment,” His Holiness observed, “people have gathered from many different countries and have the opportunity to make prayers. All sentient beings are the same in not wanting the slightest suffering, and, especially in the case of human beings, seeking joy.

“As human beings we have the ability to look for reliable methods to overcome suffering and generate happiness. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Questa mattina un velo di nebbia gelida si stendeva su Bodhgaya mentre Sua Santità il Dalai Lama compiva il breve viaggio dal monastero tibetano di Gaden Phelgyeling al Kalachakra Ground. La strada era fiancheggiata da sostenitori sorridenti, inclusi i batteristi del Ladakh, che Sua Santità salutò mentre passava.

Appena varcato il cancello del luogo d’insegnamento, Sua Santità si è fermato davanti ad una nuova statua in pietra del Buddha, commissionata dal Comitato di Gestione del Tempio di Bodhgaya (Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee BTMG), i cui membri erano lì ad accoglierlo. Supportato dai monaci del monastero di Namgyal, Sua Santità ha cantato dei versi per consacrarne l’immagine, scanditi dal lancio in aria di manciate di petali di fiori a titolo di benedizione.

Sua Santità è sceso dal golf cart proprio sul bordo del palco davanti al trono, da dove ha salutato sia a destra, a sinistra e di fronte, la folla di 50.000 persone, di cui circa 15.000 provenienti da più di 50 paesi del mondo. Voltandosi salutò la statua del Buddha dietro il trono. Ha salutato Sakya Gongma Rinpoché, Sakya Trizin e gli altri membri della famiglia Sakya. Dal lato opposto ha salutato Ganden Tri Rinpoché e Jangtsé Chöjé Rinpoché, nonché il Presidente del Parlamento tibetano ed il Sikyong Penpa Tsering.

Una volta che Sua Santità si è assiso, un gruppo di monaci Theravada si riunì davanti a lui per cantare il “Mangala Sutta” https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=1868 in pali. December 29, 2023. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – A pall of chilly mist lay over Bodhgaya this morning as His Holiness the Dalai Lama took the short drive from Gaden Phelgyeling, the Tibetan Monastery, to the Kalachakra Ground. The street was lined by smiling well-wishers including drummers from Ladakh. His Holiness waved to them as he passed.

Just inside the gate to the teaching ground His Holiness paused before a new stone statue of the Buddha commissioned by the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee (BTMG). Members of the committee we there to welcome him. Supported by monks from Namgyal Monastery His Holiness chanted verses to consecrate the image, their recitations punctuated by tossing handfuls of flower petals into the air by way of blessing.

His Holiness was able to disembark from the golf cart right at the edge of the stage in front of the throne, from where he waved to the 50,000 strong crowd, that included approximately 15,000 from more than 50 countries, to the right, the left and straight ahead. Turning around he saluted the statue of the Buddha behind the throne. He greeted Sakya Gongma Rinpoché, Sakya Trizin and other members of the Sakya family. On the opposite side he greeted Ganden Tri Rinpoché and Jangtsé Chöjé Rinpoché, as well as the Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament and the Sikyong Penpa Tsering.

Once His Holiness had taken his seat a group of Theravadin monks gathered before him to chant the ‘Mangala Sutta’ in Pali. This was followed by a lilting recitation of the ‘Heart Sutra’ and a mandala offering in Tibetan. Meanwhile tea and bread were served.

“Whatever kind of discourse is being given,” His Holiness began, addressing the crowd, “it’s important that we first check our motivation. This applies to both the teacher and the taught. We should avoid the eight worldly concerns. The teacher should neither be selfish nor only in search of peace. Disciples should not be absorbed by the pleasures of this life. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Questo è ciò che desidero condividere con voi: dovremmo integrare l’insegnamento del Buddha dentro di noi”.

23 dicembre 2023. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Dopo la positiva conclusione dei tre giorni del Forum internazionale del Sangha, i delegati si sono riuniti questa mattina sotto l’albero della Bodhi per pregare per la pace nel mondo. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è venuto dal monastero tibetano Ganden Phelgyeling per unirsi a loro. Raggiunto il lato ovest del Tempio della Mahabodhi, ha dapprima salutato Sakya Gongma Rinpoché e Jangtsé Chöjé Rinpoché, che erano seduti alla sua destra, quindi ha salutato la folla e poi il Ganden Tri Rinpoché che era seduto alla sua sinistra.

Dando il benvenuto a Sua Santità, agli illustri ospiti ed ai rispettati membri del Sangha, Siliing Tongkhor Rinpoché ha così esordito:

“Ci siamo riuniti qui all’ombra dell’Albero della Bodhi ricordando che è qui che il Buddha raggiunse l’illuminazione. Traiamo forza dagli insegnamenti che diede, che rimangono rilevanti ed attuali. In mezzo alle infinite sfide che il mondo deve affrontare, concentriamoci sullo scopo condiviso di portare conforto, compassione ed un senso di unità a tutti coloro che ne hanno bisogno.

“Nelle sacre vicinanze di questo antico tempio possano le nostre preghiere trascendere i confini risuonando come un appello alla pace, alla compassione ed alla guarigione. Bodhgaya, dove secoli fa ebbe luogo l’illuminazione, è un faro per un futuro più luminoso ed un mondo più compassionevole.

“Mentre uniamo le nostre mani in preghiera, possa questo incontro portare all’umanità una forza duratura, e possano le benedizioni che invochiamo oggi portare conforto a molti e diffondersi come delle onde in tutto il mondo. Possano le nostre preghiere essere colme della saggezza che ha avuto origine qui”.

Il Ven Mahayano Aun ha annunciato che in questa occasione le preghiere saranno cantate dai rappresentanti di 11 comunità Sangha delle tradizioni Pali e Sanscrita. “Siamo tutti seguaci dello stesso Buddha”, ha aggiunto, “possano le nostre preghiere contribuire alla pace ed all’armonia tra tutti gli esseri viventi”.

Prima Sua Santità e poi Sakya Gongma Rinpoché, Jangtsé Chöjé Rinpoché, il Venerabile Abate del Tempio Reale Tailandese di Bodhgaya, il Ganden Tri Rinpoché ed il Vice Sangharaja del Myanmar sono stati invitati ad accendere una lampada di saggezza per conferire un’apertura di buon auspicio all’incontro. His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “This is what I wish to share with you: that we should integrate the teaching of the Buddha within ourselves.

December 23, 2023. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Following the successful conclusion of the three day International Sangha Forum, delegates gathered this morning beneath the Bodhi Tree to make prayers for world peace. His Holiness the Dalai Lama came from the Tibetan Monastery, Ganden Phelgyeling to join them. Reaching the west side of the Mahabodhi Temple he greeted Sakya Gongma Rinpoché and Jangtsé Chöjé Rinpoché, who were seated to his right of him. He waved to the crowd and then greeted the Ganden Tri Rinpoché who was seated to his left.

Welcoming His Holiness, the eminent guests and respected Sangha members Siliing Tongkhor Rinpoché declared:

“We have gathered here in the shade of the Bodhi Tree recalling that this is where the Buddha attained enlightenment. Let us draw strength from the teachings he gave, which remain relevant and timely today. Amidst the unending challenges facing the world, let us focus on the shared purpose of bringing solace, compassion and a sense of oneness to all in need.

“In the hallowed vicinity of this ancient temple may our prayers transcend borders resounding as a call for peace, compassion and healing. Bodhgaya where enlightenment took place centuries ago is a beacon to a brighter future and a more compassionate world.

“As we join our hands in prayer may this gathering bring humanity enduring strength, and may the blessings we invoke today bring comfort to many and spread like ripples around the world. May our prayers be filled with the wisdom that originated here.” Read the rest of this entry »

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Agire spinti dalla rabbia o dall’attaccamento è un errore. L’essenza del Dharma è studiare ciò che viene insegnato, riflettere su ciò che hai imparato ed applicare dentro di te ciò che hai compreso.

20 dicembre 2023. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Questa mattina Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha percorso il breve tragitto dal Monastero di Ganden Pelgyeling al Centro Congressi Internazionale di Bodhgaya, dove avrebbe preso parte alla sessione inaugurale del primo Forum Internazionale del Sangha (ISF), dove lo hanno accolto sulla porta i membri del comitato organizzatore. Prima di entrare, si è preso un momento per godersi un gruppo di Mönpa dell’Arunachal Pradesh che ballavano sul prato per festeggiare il suo arrivo. Una volta che Sua Santità si è seduto sul palco tra il Ganden Tri Rinpoché e il Primo Ministro dell’Arunachal Pradesh, Shri Pem Khandu, il moderatore, Ven Mahayano Aun, ha reso omaggio al Buddha, al Dharma ed al Sangha, ha salutato Sua Santità ed ha salutato tutti i presenti, rappresentanti delle tradizioni buddiste in questo luogo di buon auspicio, dichiarando che lo scopo del Forum è quello di tenere un dialogo sul ruolo del Buddismo nel 21° secolo e discutere su come creare comprensione e cooperazione tra le molteplici tradizioni buddiste. Ha quindi annunciato che ci sarebbero stati tre giorni di dibattiti, seguiti da un quarto di preghiere per la pace nel mondo nei pressi del Tempio di Mahabodhi. Siling Tongkhor Rinpoché ha tradotto questa introduzione dall’inglese al tibetano.

Per cominciare, un gruppo di monaci Theravada ha recitato in Pali il “Karaniya Metta Sutta” https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=5699 “Le parole del Buddha sull’amorevole gentilezza”, che sono stati seguiti da un gruppo di monaci dell’Università sanscrita di Varanasi che hanno cantato in sanscrito il Mangala Sutra https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=1868 il Sutra del buon auspicio.

Il moderatore ha chiesto a Sua Santità ed agli altri leader di premere i pulsanti davanti a loro per accendere una lampada di saggezza e aprire i lavori. December 20, 2023. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – This morning His Holiness the Dalai Lama drove the short distance from Ganden Pelgyeling Monastery to the International Convention Centre, Bodhgaya, where he was to take part in the inaugural session of the first International Sangha Forum (ISF). He members of the organizing committee welcomed him at the door. Before going inside, he took a moment to enjoy a group of Mönpas from Arunachal Pradesh dancing on the lawn in celebration of his arrival. Once His Holiness had taken his seat on the stage between the Ganden Tri Rinpoché and the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Shri Pem Khandu, the moderator, Ven Mahayano Aun paid homage to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, saluted His Holiness and greeted all the representatives of Buddhist traditions in this most auspicious place. He declared the aim of the Forum was to hold a dialogue on role of Buddhism in the 21st century and to discuss how to create understanding and cooperation among the array of Buddhist traditions. He announced that there would be three days of discussions, followed on the fourth by prayers for peace in the world in the vicinity of the Mahabodhi Temple. Siling Tongkhor Rinpoché translated this introduction into English was into Tibetan.

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Non è sufficiente conoscere queste pratiche, è essenziale metterle in pratica”.

Siliguri, Bengala Occidentale, India, 14 dicembre 2023 – Ieri, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è stato invitato a un pranzo ufficiale di Stato in suo onore a Samman Bhawan, la residenza del Primo Ministro del Sikkim. Quando si è avvicinato all’edificio, è stato accolto da Tashi Shölpa e dagli energici danzatori Snow Lion. Alla porta gli è stato offerto il tradizionale ‘Chema Changpu’ ed è stato poi accompagnato al suo posto in testa alla sala. Tutti i presenti hanno potuto gustare un pranzo sontuoso.

Questa mattina, Sua Santità ha ricevuto un caloroso saluto a Gangtok prima di volare in elicottero a Salugara, nel Bengala Occidentale, dove è stato invitato a insegnare al Monastero di Sed-Gyued. I membri del pubblico si sono allineati lungo la strada che porta al monastero per salutarlo al suo arrivo. Tashi Shölpa e i danzatori del Leone delle Nevi lo hanno accolto al cancello. All’interno, il monastero era riccamente decorato con ghirlande di calendule. Anche il vialetto era cosparso di petali di calendula.

Sua Santità ha salutato la folla prima di salire la rampa che porta al tempio. Una volta entrato, ha reso omaggio alle statue di Jé Tsongkhapa e dei suoi principali discepoli e ha acceso una lampada. Una volta seduto, Khenpo Wangdu, Abate di Sed-gyued, ha offerto un mandala e le rappresentazioni del corpo, della parola e della mente del Buddha.

“Quando nasciamo, veniamo nutriti da nostra madre. È così che inizia la nostra vita, crogiolandoci nelle sue cure e nel suo affetto. Dobbiamo imparare a custodire questo tipo di amore e di affetto per tutta la vita.

“Parliamo di costruire la pace nel mondo, ma noi esseri umani tendiamo a creare divisioni tra di noi, vedendo le altre persone in termini di ‘noi’ e ‘loro’. Di conseguenza, combattiamo e sprechiamo risorse preziose per inventare armi sempre più potenti. Se siamo davvero interessati a costruire la pace nel mondo, il modo per iniziare è coltivare la pace della mente.

“Invece di promuovere relazioni amichevoli e armoniose, litighiamo e combattiamo e, di conseguenza, la pace viene distrutta. Abbiamo visto cosa è successo nella prima e nella seconda guerra mondiale; ora ci sono persone che parlano di una terza. Dobbiamo lavorare per rafforzare i nostri sentimenti affettivi naturali e non lasciare che diminuiscano. Il nostro obiettivo dovrebbe essere la pace mentale.

“In questi giorni cerco di rendere le persone consapevoli del fatto che tutti gli otto miliardi di persone che vivono su questo pianeta sono stati nutriti dalle loro madri. Sotto questo aspetto siamo tutti uguali. Ogni essere umano su questa terra è sopravvissuto dopo la nascita perché qualcuno lo ha ricoperto di amore e affetto, l’amore di una madre. Ricordare questo aspetto e farne tesoro contribuirà a garantire la pace nel mondo. Non lo farà, invece, abbandonarsi a emozioni negative come la rabbia e la gelosia. Pensare che le altre persone siano uguali a lei è un passo verso la pace.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “It’s not enough just to know about these practices, it’s essential to put them into effect: please, do you best.”

December 14, 2023. Siliguri, West Bengal, India – Yesterday, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was invited to an Official State Luncheon in his honour at Samman Bhawan, the Chief Minister of Sikkim’s residence. As he approached the building, he was welcomed by Tashi Shölpa and energetic Snow Lion dancers. At the door he was offered the traditional ‘Chema Changpu’ and was then escorted to his seat at the head of the hall. Everyone attending enjoyed a sumptuous lunch.

This morning, His Holiness was given a warm send-off in Gangtok before flying by helicopter to Salugara in West Bengal, where he had been invited to teach at Sed-Gyued Monastery. Members of the public lined the road to the monastery to greet him as he arrived. Tashi Shölpa and Snow Lion dancers welcomed him at the gate. Inside, the monastery the monastery was richly decorated with garlands of marigolds. Even the driveway was strewn with marigold petals.

His Holiness waved to the crowd before climbing the ramp to the temple. Once inside he paid his respects before statues of Jé Tsongkhapa and his chief disciples and lit a lamp. Once he had sat down, Khenpo Wangdu, Abbot of Sed-gyued, offered a mandala and representations of the body, speech and mind of the Buddha.

Responding to this warm welcome, His Holiness declared that so far on his visit to North-east India his teachings had gone well and that he has been feeling fit.

“The people of Sikkim showed fervent devotion, but I advised them too of the importance of study. Whether you follow a religious tradition or not is a personal decision, but if you do, you need to study to understand what it’s about.

“People in Sikkim seemed to appreciate that I had come.

“People may think that religion is about prayers and rituals, but it also needs to involve study. When I wake in the morning, I recite Jé Rinpoché’s ‘In Praise of Dependent Arising’. I also advised people in Sikkim that it’s important that we discipline our unruly minds, because this is what leads to happiness.” Read the rest of this entry »

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Tutti gli esseri umani vogliono essere felici, ma quando guardiamo indietro alla storia, vediamo quanto spesso le guerre sono state combattute in nome della religione. Questo approccio è obsoleto. È responsabilità di ognuno di noi lavorare per creare un mondo pacifico e armonioso”.

12 dicembre 2023 Gangtok, Sikkim, India – Quando Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è arrivato questa mattina allo Stadio Paljor, è stato ricevuto da Shri Sonam Lama, Onorevole Ministro del Dipartimento degli Affari Ecclesiastici. Giunto al padiglione dal quale avrebbe conferito insegnamenti, venne di nuovo accolto da S.E. Lakshman Prasad Acharya, governatore del Sikkim e Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), onorevole primo ministro del Sikkim.

Tsechokling Rinpoché ha rivolto alcune parole di benvenuto ai dignitari seduti sul palco ed alle circa 40.000 persone riunite nello stadio, alcune delle quali erano arrivate prima delle 4:00 del mattino. Ha quindi invitato il Primo Ministro a prendere la parola.

“Namo Buddhaya”, ha iniziato ed ha dato inizialmente il benvenuto a Sua Santità, ai Rinpoché, all’On. Governatore del Sikkim, all’On. Presidente della Corte Suprema dell’Alta Corte del Sikkim, al presidente e vicepresidente dell’Assemblea legislativa del Sikkim, ai ministri e altri stimati dignitari per poi così rivolgersi ai rappresentanti dei media ed al pubblico:

“Do il benvenuto a ciascuno di voi in questa occasione propizia.

“Do il benvenuto a Sua Santità il Dalai Lama, la manifestazione di Avalokiteshvara nel bellissimo e verdeggiante stato del Sikkim.

“Oggi siamo alla presenza di uno dei leader spirituali più rispettati al mondo. Il suo messaggio sull’unità dell’umanità ispira persone in tutto il mondo. È venuto da Dharamsala per parlarci, cosa per la quale esprimo un grande debito di gratitudine. Il nostro spirito sarà sollevato dalle sue parole; le nostre intenzioni diventeranno pure. Ascoltare la sua spiegazione delle “Trentasette pratiche dei Bodhisattva” https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=134 di Gyalsey Thogmé Sangpo ci aiuterà a trovare la via della pace mentre intraprendiamo la nostra strada attraverso la vita moderna. Sono onorato ancora una volta, a nome del popolo del Sikkim, di esprimere la nostra gratitudine”.

Sua Santità ha quindi offerto al Primo Ministro una statua del Buddha.

“Oggi i discepoli sono principalmente persone del Sikkim e dei paesi vicini”, ha esordito Sua Santità, parlando in tibetano, tradotto in nepalese ed in altre lingue. “Molte persone sono venute qui per rispetto nei miei confronti. Vi do il benvenuto.

“La maggior parte di voi professa una pratica religiosa e molti di voi hanno interesse per l’insegnamento del Buddha. Noi esseri umani, dal momento in cui nasciamo, non vogliamo soffrire; vogliamo essere felici. Questo è un istinto naturale che condividiamo anche con gli animali. Tutti gli esseri viventi desiderano semplicemente essere felici e gli esseri umani sono in grado di esprimere questo desiderio. His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “Don’t regard things as real and give up attachment”.

December 12, 2023 Gangtok, Sikkim, India – When His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived at the Paljor Stadium this morning, he was received at the door by Shri Sonam Lama, Hon’ble Minister of the Ecclesiastical Affairs Department. When he reached the pavilion from which he would teach, he was welcomed once again by H.E. Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Sikkim and Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim.

Tsechokling Rinpoché spoke a few words of welcome to the dignitaries seated on the stage and to the estimated 40,000 people assembled in stadium, some of whom had arrived before 4:00 am. He invited the Chief Minister to speak.

“Namo Buddhaya,” he began and proceeded to welcome His Holiness, Rinpochés, the Hon. Governor of Sikkim, the Hon. Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, Ministers and other esteemed dignitaries. Addressing representatives of the media and members of the public, he said:

“I welcome each and every one of you on this auspicious occasion.

“I welcome His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the manifestation of Avalokiteshvara to the beautiful, green state of Sikkim.

“Today, we are in the presence of one of the world’s most respected spiritual leaders. His message regarding the oneness of humanity inspires people around the world. He has come all the way from Dharamsala to speak to us, for which I express a great debt of gratitude. Our spirits will be lifted by his words; our intentions will become pure. Listening to his explanation of Gyalsey Thogmé Sangpo’s ‘Thirty-seven Practices of Bodhisattvas’ will help us find the path of peace as we negotiate our way through modern life.
