Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India – Stamattina, mentre Sua Santità il Dalai Lama si dirigeva verso il Villaggio dei Bambini Tibetani (TCV, Tibetan Children Village), piccoli gruppi di persone si sono radunate lungo la strada per vederlo passare. Una volta che ha imboccato la direzione della scuola, i bambini e poi una fila di adulti addobbati con abiti tradizionali tibetani, hanno cantato e ballato gioiosamente per salutarlo sul bordo della strada. Vicino al palco lo hanno accolto ballerini in costume da yak e da leone delle nevi.

Sua Santità ed altri ospiti e dignitari, tra cui il Leh DC, Santosh Sukhadeve, il CEC del Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Tashi Gyaltsen, i Presidenti della Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) e della Ladakh Gonpa Association (LGA) Thubten Tsewang e Ven Tsering Wangdus e il Rappresentante Capo dell’Amministrazione Centrale Tibetana (CTA) Dhondup Tashi erano riuniti sotto un piccolo tendone. Questo trascurava il campo sportivo della scuola dove sedeva un pubblico di 5000 persone. Tutti si sono alzati mentre venivano suonati gli inni nazionali tibetani ed indiani.

Il CRO Dhondup Tashi ha dato il benvenuto a Sua Santità e lo ha ringraziato per aver gentilmente dedicato del tempo a parlare a questo raduno di tibetani in Ladakh, comunicando che ci sono 5200 tibetani nell’area di Leh e altri 2000 nomadi nel Chang Thang. Ha espresso gratitudine al governo indiano e all’amministrazione locale del Territorio dell’Unione (UT) per tutto l’aiuto che forniscono alla comunità tibetana. Ha anche riconosciuto la guida e il sostegno che la comunità tibetana in Ladakh riceve dal CTA guidato dal Sikyong Penpa Tsering.

Il CRO ha affermato di aver compilato un rapporto più ampio che aveva presentato a Sua Santità per iscritto. Pregò quindi Sua Santità di vivere a lungo.

Il moderatore ha annunciato che ci sarebbero state presentazioni di canti e balli, alcuni già conosciuti, altri nuovi. Prima un gruppo di studenti tibetani ha ballato una canzone che prevedeva di fare offerte ai Lama ed ai maestri. July 26, 2023. Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India – As His Holiness the Dalai Lama took the short drive to the Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV) this morning, small groups of members of the public gathered on the road to see him pass. Once he had taken the turning to the school, children and then a line of adults dressed in traditional Tibetan attire, sang and danced joyfully to greet him on the side of the road. Close to the stage dancers in yak and snow-lion costumes welcomed him.

His Holiness and other guests and dignitaries, who included the Leh DC, Santosh Sukhadeve, the CEC of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Tashi Gyaltsen, Presidents of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) and the Ladakh Gonpa Association (LGA) Thubten Tsewang and Ven Tsering Wangdus and the Chief Representative of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) Dhondup Tashi were assembled in a small marquee. This overlooked the school sports ground where sat a 5000 strong audience. Everyone stood while the Tibetan and Indian National Anthems were played.

CRO Dhondup Tashi welcomed His Holiness and thanked him for kindly taking the time to talk to this gathering of Tibetans in Ladakh. He mentioned that there are 5200 Tibetans in the Leh area and another 2000 nomads in the Chang Thang. He expressed gratitude to the Government of India and the local Union Territory (UT) administration for all the help they provide the Tibetan community. Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India – Il tempo s’era fatto più luminoso e, mentre Sua Santità il Dalai Lama usciva dalla sua residenza, gli studiosi stavano dimostrando la loro abilità nel dibattito davanti al padiglione degli insegnamenti. Come è sua abitudine, prima di salutare la folla Sua Santità ha reso omaggio all’immagine del Buddha.

Una volta assiso al suo posto sul trono, si è rivolto alle circa 50.000 persone presenti .

“Negli ultimi tre giorni, gli insegnamenti sono andati bene ed oggi state offrendo preghiere per la mia lunga vita. Quando la fede ed il legame spirituale tra i discepoli ed il Lama sono incrollabili, diventano una condizione di buon auspicio che contribuisce a far vivere a lungo il Lama.

“Nei miei sogni ho visto dei segni che indicano che potrei essere in grado di vivere fino a circa 110 anni. Quando mi guardate ora: sembro un ottantenne? Non sembro forse più giovane?

“Per quanto mi riguarda, ho un legame spirituale con la gente del Paese delle Nevi e loro hanno una fede incrollabile in me, così come la gente della regione himalayana. Inoltre, persone in tutto il mondo, buddiste o no, hanno espresso ammirazione per quello che ho fatto.

“Come seguace del Buddha, la mia pratica principale è coltivare la mente del risveglio di bodhicitta e la comprensione della vacuità. Anche voi dovreste provare a praticare in questo modo. July 24, 2023. Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India – The weather was brighter and school-children were demonstrating their debate skill in front of the teaching pavilion as His Holiness the Dalai Lama drove out from his residence. As is his custom, he paid his respects before the image of the Buddha in the pavilion before stepping out to wave to the crowd.

Once he was settled in his seat on the throne, he addressed the approximately 50,000 strong congregation.

“Over the last three days, the teachings have gone well and today you are offering prayers for my long life. When faith and the spiritual bond between disciples and Lama are unwavering, they become an auspicious condition that contributes to the Lama’s being able to live long.

“In my dreams I’ve seen signs that indicate that I may be able to live to be about 110 years old. When you look at me now, do I look like I’m in my eighties? Don’t I look younger than that?

“As far as I’m concerned, I have a spiritual bond with the people of the Land of Snow and they have unwavering faith in me, as do the people of the Himalayan Region. What’s more, people around the world, whether they are Buddhist or not, have expressed admiration for what I’ve done.

“As a follower of the Buddha, my main practice is to cultivate the awakening mind of bodhichitta and an understanding of emptiness. You too should try to practise in this way. And if you do, that will create an auspicious circumstance for me to live long.”

Tea and sweet rice were served.

The long-life ceremony today belonged to the Sutra tradition and was based on Prayers to the Sixteen Arhats. It included praises to the Buddha, the Prayer to the Sixteen Arhats, a Seven Limb Prayer and short Mandala Offering and a Request to the Lama to Remain.

During an extensive mandala offering led by Taktsak Kundeling Rinpoché, representatives of the organizers specifically requested His Holiness to live long. Next was an offering of a Buddha statue, a scripture and a chörten, a set of robes, a fruit-filled alms bowl, and a monk’s staff. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “La natura della mente è chiara luce e le contaminazioni accidentali sono radicate nell’ignoranza.”

Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India – A seguito del rinvio del secondo giorno di insegnamenti di ieri per un nubifragio, questa mattina presto la gente ha iniziato a radunarsi nel campo di insegnamenti di Shewatsel. Stimano gli organizzatori che circa 65.000 persone si siano stipate dentro ed intorno al terreno, molte delle quali in piedi per evitare la pioggia. Alle 6:30 Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è uscito dalla sua residenza su un golf-car, sovrastato, in segno di rispetto, da un giallo ombrello cerimoniale e preceduto da monaci dal berretto giallo che recavano incenso e suonavano corni.

Dalla piattaforma dove è sceso dal veicolo, Sua Santità ha sorriso ed ha salutato i presenti vicino. All’interno del padiglione ha reso omaggio all’immagine del Buddha ed ha acceso le lampade votiva davanti ad essa. Giunto al palco ha salutato la folla e moltissime persone hanno risposto a loro volta al saluto. Quindi ha preso posto sul trono e si è rivolto ai presenti.

“Oggi, qui a Leh, in Ladakh, ci sono persone dalla fede e convinzione incrollabili: laici e monaci. Potreste tutti avere altre cose da fare, ma avete scelto di venire qui per partecipare all’Iniziazione di Avalokitesvara, il Grande Compassionevole, perciò vi ringrazio.

“Prima di tutto farò i rituali preparatori e, nel frattempo, potrete recitare il mantra dalle sei sillabe: Om mani padme hum. Per quanto riguarda Avalokitesvara, tutti i Buddha lo lodano. Pieno di grandi qualità positive, è l’incarnazione della compassione, proprio come Manjushri è considerato l’incarnazione della saggezza. “L’onnisciente Gendun Drup ed i successivi Dalai Lama erano come Avalokitesvara. Non ho le loro qualità, ma coltivo bodhicitta. La mia preghiera quotidiana infatti è:

Finché ci sarà lo spazio,

E finché ci saranno gli esseri senzienti,

Fino ad allora, posso rimanere anch’io

July 23, 2023. Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India – Following a postponement of the second day of teachings due to local cloudbursts yesterday, people began gather on the Shewatsel teaching ground early this morning. Eventually, the organizers estimate, about 65,000 people packed into and around the ground, many of them standing to avoid the gentle rain. At 6:30am His Holiness the Dalai Lama emerged from his residence riding in a golfcart, preceded by yellow-hatted monks carrying incense and blowing horns. A ceremonial umbrella, a mark of respect, flew over the vehicle.

From the platform where he climbed out of the vehicle, His Holiness smiled and waved to the crowd nearby. Inside the pavilion he saluted the image of the Buddha and lit lamps before it. Coming right out to the front of the stage he waved to the crowd before him and many of them waved back. He then took his seat on the throne and addressed the congregation.

“Today, here in Leh, Ladakh are people of unwavering faith and conviction, lay people and monastics. You may all have other things to do, but you’ve chosen to come here to attend the empowerment of Avalokiteshvara, the Great Compassionate One, for which I thank you.

“First of all, I’ll do the preparatory rituals and, in the meantime, you can recite the six-syllable mantra, Om mani padme hum. With regard to Avalokiteshvara, all the Buddhas praise him. Full of great positive qualities, he is the embodiment of compassion, much as Manjushri is regarded as the embodiment of wisdom. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Attaccamento e rabbia non sono radicati nella natura della mente. Se lo fossero, non potremmo mai avere nessun’altra esperienza. Ma, come accade, le emozioni negative sono solo temporanee, mentre l’amore e la compassione diventano più forti con la conoscenza.”

21 luglio 2023. Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh UT, India – Questa mattina, già al sorgere del sole, migliaia di persone hanno iniziato a riversarsi nell’area di Shewatsel dove Sua Santità avrebbe tenuto l’insegnamento, fino a giungere circa a 45.000.

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama dalla sua dimora dello Shewatsel Phodrang ha raggiunto il luogo dell’insegnamento su una golf car, lo precedevano dei monaci dai loro berretti gialli da cerimonia che suonavano il corno. Un simbolico ombrello di seta gialla svolazzava sopra il veicolo di Sua Santità, che sorrideva e salutava la folla. Nel frattempo, innanzi al trono, degli studiosi locali mostravano le loro capacità di dibattito.

Mentre Sua Santità prendeva posto, Lama locali e Tulku sedevano intorno al trono, quindi dei Funzionari della Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), della Ladakh Gonpa Association (LGA) e gli sponsor dell’evento hanno fatto a Sua Santità un’offerta formale del mandala.

“Oggi, qui in Ladakh, illustrerò un insegnamento del Buddha”, ha esordito Sua Santità. “Tutte le tradizioni religiose ci insegnano ad essere gentili e disponibili gli uni con gli altri, cosa che apprezzo. Così come apprezzo e rispetto tutte le tradizioni religiose. Quando visito luoghi diversi in paesi diversi, cerco di visitarne i luoghi di culto, se possibile.

“Le persone su questa terra combattono tra loro per una serie di motivi, ma, quando lo fanno in nome della religione, è davvero un peccato. Questo è uno dei motivi per cui mi sforzo di stabilire l’armonia interreligiosa.

“Qui in Ladakh, ad esempio, la maggioranza della popolazione è buddista, ma c’è anche una consistente comunità di musulmani, oltre ad un certo numero di cristiani ed altri appartenenti alle tradizioni non buddiste dell’India. Possono avere tutti modi filosofici diversi di spiegare le loro tradizioni, ma, alla fine, non sono altro che modi diversi di servire gli altri esseri. I cristiani, ad esempio, sono noti per il loro impegno nell’istruzione e nell’assistenza sanitaria, ma tutte queste tradizioni fanno del bene. His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “Just talking about peace isn’t enough. Real world peace will only come about when we reduce arrogance and jealousy, anger and hatred and increase our sense of love and compassion.”

July 21, 2023. Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh UT, India – People began pouring into the Shewatsel Teaching Area soon after the sun rose this morning. Eventually, an estimated 45,000 filled the ground. His Holiness the Dalai Lama drove from the Shewatsel Phodrang to the teaching pavilion in a golf cart. Before him walked monks in their ceremonial yellow hats blowing horns. A symbolic yellow silk umbrella fluttered over the vehicle as it drove. His Holiness smiled and waved to the crowd as he passed. Meanwhile, before the throne, local schoolchildren displayed their debating skills.

Within the teaching pavilion His Holiness paid his respects and lit a lamp before the image of the Buddha. Assembled guests greeted him as he walked out to the edge of stage before the throne. From there he again smiled and waved to the crowd to the left, right and in front, as well as making a gesture into the space above. Tens of thousands of people folded their hands in response to his greeting.

Local Lamas and Tulkus sat around the throne as His Holiness took his seat. A formal mandala offering was made by officials of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) and the Ladakh Gonpa Association (LGA) and sponsors of the occasion.

“Today, here in Ladakh, I’m going to give a discourse on the teaching of the Buddha,” His Holiness began. “All religious traditions teach us to be kind and helpful to one another, which I appreciate. I value and respect all religious traditions. When I visit different places in different countries, I try to visit other people’s places of worship if I can.

“People on this earth fight each other for a variety of reasons, but when they do so in the name of religion, it’s really unfortunate. This is one of the reasons why I make an effort to establish inter-religious harmony. Read the rest of this entry »

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Guardate, oggi il cielo è azzurro e la terra è limpida. Le persone che vivono in tali circostanze dovrebbero considerarsi fratelli e sorelle e dovrebbero evitare di essere disturbate da emozioni negative. Non dovremmo essere egoisti. Non dovremmo disprezzare o denigrare le altre persone. Dovremmo lavorare per il loro benessere. Più coltiviamo un atteggiamento altruistico, più le nostre emozioni negative si placheranno. Questo è il mio approccio alla pratica.

14 luglio 2023. Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India – Questa mattina, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama si è recato da Shewatsel Phodrang alla città di Leh, dove ha compiuto un pellegrinaggio al Jokhang, il tempio principale. All’ingresso è stato accolto dai funzionari e, all’interno del tempio, dai Lama. Ha reso omaggio alle immagini sacre, ha salutato l’assemblea ed ha preso posto.

“Essendo giunto in Ladakh”, Sua Santità ha così esordito all’assemblea, “oggi sono venuto qui nel Jokhang. Facciamo tutti affidamento al seguente verso da “Entrare nella via del Bodhisattva” https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=2431.

Finché ci sarà lo spazio,

E finché ci saranno gli esseri senzienti,

Fino ad allora, possa rimanere anch’io

Per aiutare a dissipare la sofferenza del mondo.

“Lo recito ogni giorno come una preghiera per il desiderio di essere al servizio degli altri. Il Buddha stesso ha accumulato meriti e saggezza per tre innumerevoli eoni allo scopo di servire gli altri. Era motivato dall’altruismo ed alla fine divenne illuminato.

“Tutti noi abbiamo la natura di Buddha. La nostra vera natura è quella di essere liberi da contaminazioni, eppure, nel frattempo, siamo soggetti a contaminazioni che sono temporanee. La natura fondamentale della mente è chiara luce, chiarezza e consapevolezza: e tutti l’abbiamo. Non è un qualcosa che otteniamo facendo degli sforzi, la possediamo tutti naturalmente. La nostra mente di chiara luce è oscurata da contaminazioni avventizie, ma, facendo affidamento sulle parole del Buddha, possiamo eliminarle.

“Eliminando le contaminazioni nella sua mente, il Buddha raggiunse il Corpo di Verità-Saggezza. E il fattore fondamentale per raggiungerlo è anche dentro di noi. Tutti noi abbiamo questa natura fondamentale sulla base della quale raggiungere l’illuminazione.

“Quando diciamo che prendo rifugio nel Buddha, non è come se ci rivolgessimo a qualcun altro da qualche altra parte, perché tutti noi abbiamo dentro una mente di chiara luce, che, nella sua natura intrinseca, è libera da contaminazioni. Quella purezza naturale è oscurata da contaminazioni accidentali che diventano sempre più sottili man mano che ci impegniamo nella pratica dei Tre Addestramenti: Moralità, Concentrazione – meditazione, Saggezza. Quando finalmente riusciamo a rimuovere le contaminazioni che oscurano la mente, anche noi possiamo ottenere il Corpo di Verità che il Buddha ha conseguito. Il vero significato di prendere rifugio nel Buddha è considerare lo stato risultante che raggiungeremo”.

Sua Santità ha ricordato che ci sono molte tradizioni religiose nel mondo. Ha ricordato che a Lhasa c’era una comunità di musulmani che, non solo erano riconosciuti dal governo tibetano, ma erano anche invitati alle funzioni governative. Shewatsel, Leh, Ladakh, India – This morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama drove from Shewatsel Phodrang into Leh city, where he made a pilgrim’s visit to the Jokhang, the principal temple there. He was welcomed by officials at the gate and by Lamas inside the temple. He paid his respects before the sacred images, saluted the congregation and took his seat.

“Having arrived in Ladakh,” His Holiness told the gathering, “today, I’ve come here to the Jokhang. We all rely on the following verse from ‘Entering the Bodhisattva Way’ https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=4145.

As long as space endures,
And as long as sentient beings remain,
Until then, may I too remain
To help dispel the misery of the world.

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Qui in Ladakh la tradizione buddista risplende luminosa come il sole…

Shewatsel Phodrang, Leh, Ladakh, India – Questa mattina Sua Santità il Dalai Lama, giunto in volo a Leh da Delhi, è stato ricevuto all’aeroporto da Thiksey Rinpoché, Taglung Matrul Rinpoché, Taglung Tsetrul Rinpoché, Jhado Rinpoché e Drukpa Khamdrak Rinpoché, i leader dell’Associazione buddista del Ladakh, nonché dall’On CEC LAHDC Leh Adv Tashi Gyaltsen, dall’On. Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal e dal Rappresentante dell’Amministrazione Centrale Tibetana (CTA) Dhondup Tashi.

Decine di migliaia di persone del posto, ladaki e tibetani, addobbati con i loro abiti di festa ed offrendo sciarpe di seta, si sono allineati per salutare Sua Santità su entrambi i lati della strada dall’aeroporto fino allo Shewatsel Phodrang.

Quando questi, dopo un’ora e mezza, ha raggiunto il Phodrang, Thiksey Rinpoché, Thupten Tsewang della LBA e Dhondup Tashi della CTA gli hanno offerto un mandala. Sua Santità sorridendo così si è rivolto loro: “Giù nelle pianure ci sono così tante nuvole e pioggia, mi mancava il cielo blu. Così sono volato in Ladakh ed il cielo azzurro mi è diventato di nuovo visibile. Era così umido ed afoso sotto quel cielo coperto, volevo davvero venire in Ladakh dove il clima è diverso.

“Ora sono qui e vedo tra di voi molti volti familiari. Sembrate tutti luminosi e vivaci. Mi viene in mente ciò che ha scritto Jé Rinpoché https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=11772:

Ovunque l’insegnamento del Buddha non si è diffuso

Ed ovunque si è diffuso ma è declinato

Possa io, mosso da grande compassione, chiarire profondamente

July 11, 2023. Shewatsel Phodrang, Leh, Ladakh, India – This morning His Holiness the Dalai Lama flew from Delhi and arrived in Leh at about 10:30am. He was received at the airport by Thiksey Rinpoché, Taglung Matrul Rinpoché, Taglung Tsetrul Rinpoché, Jhado Rinpoché and Drukpa Khamdrak Rinpoché, the leaders of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, as well as Hon CEC LAHDC Leh Adv Tashi Gyaltsen, Hon Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal and the Representative of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) Dhondup Tashi.

Tens of thousands of local people, Ladakhis and Tibetans, dressed in their best clothes and holding silk scarves in their hands lined both sides of the road from the airport all the way to the Shewatsel Phodrang to greet His Holiness.

When he reached the Phodrang after an hour and half, Thiksey Rinpoché, Thupten Tsewang of the LBA and Dhondup Tashi of the CTA offered him a mandala. His Holiness laughed and told them, “Down on the plains there’s so much cloud and rain, I missed the blue sky. So I flew up to Ladakh and the clear blue sky became visible again. It was so damp and humid under the overcast sky, I really wanted to come to Ladakh where the weather is different.

“Now I’m here and I can see many familiar faces among you. You all look bright and lively. I’m reminded of what Jé Rinpoché wrote:

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Secondo le indicazioni dei miei sogni ed altre previsioni, mi aspetto di vivere più di 100 anni. Ho servito gli altri fino ad ora e sono determinato a continuare a farlo. Per favore pregate su questa base per la mia lunga vita.

6 luglio 2023. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, India – Questa mattina, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama con un sorriso radioso sul volto è entrato nel cortile del tempio adiacente alla sua residenza. Gli è stato presentato il tradizionale “Chema Changphu” mentre gli artisti del Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) gli hanno cantato il loro benvenuto nel giorno del suo compleanno. Ha preso posto sotto il tempio all’inizio del cortile con i membri della sua famiglia seduti proprio dietro di lui ed i membri dell’Amministrazione centrale tibetana (CTA), attuali e presenti, dietro di lui su entrambi i lati.

Il moderatore ha comunicato che il primo ministro dell’Himachal Pradesh avrebbe dovuto partecipare al raduno come ospite principale. Nel frattempo, ha annunciato che Sikyong Penpa Tsering avrebbe alzato la bandiera tibetana mentre i musicisti del TIPA Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts avrebbero eseguito un’interpretazione dell’inno nazionale tibetano a cui si è unito il pubblico e Sua Santità ha alzato la mano in segno di saluto. Subito dopo è stato cantato l’inno nazionale indiano ed ancora una volta Sua Santità ha alzato la mano in segno di saluto.

Il moderatore ha invitato il Sikyong, il Presidente del Parlamento Tibetano in esilio ed il Justice Commissioner a fare un’offerta del mandala a Sua Santità, cui è stata offerta una torta riccamente decorata che ha tagliato. Le fette sono state distribuite tra gli ospiti che cantavano “Tanti auguri a te”.

Nel suo discorso per celebrare l’occasione, il Sikyong ha affermato che la visione di Sua Santità ha valore per l’intera umanità. Cercando di evidenziare ciò che Sua Santità ha raggiunto a livello globale, ha toccato il gran numero di paesi che ha visitato in tutto il mondo, alcuni dei quali molte volte, condividendone le principali motivazioni: sulla coltivazione della responsabilità universale e sullo sviluppo di un buon cuore.

Il Sikyong ha osservato che in relazione al Tibet, Sua Santità ha presentato per la prima volta il Piano di Pace in Cinque Punti al Congresso degli Stati Uniti ed ha elaborato la sua visione per un Approccio della Via di Mezzo al Parlamento Europeo a Strasburgo.

Penpa Tsering ha anche osservato che la curiosità e l’interesse per la scienza di Sua Santità sono stati il punto di partenza per un dialogo tra studiosi buddisti e scienziati comprendente 35 incontri del Mind & Life Institute. In questo contesto, ha osservato, Sua Santità ha sottolineato che una motivazione compassionevole dovrebbe essere la pietra angolare di qualsiasi ricerca scientifica per garantire che i suoi risultati non diventino causa di danno per gli esseri senzienti o per l’ambiente. His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “I was born in Tibet and I bear this name Dalai Lama, but in addition to working for the cause of Tibet, I’ve been working for the welfare of all sentient beings. I’ve done whatever I could without losing hope or allowing my determination to flag. I’m angry with no one, not even those Chinese leaders who have adopted a harsh attitude towards Tibet.

July 6, 2023. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, India – This morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama stepped into the temple courtyard adjacent to his residence, a radiant smile on his face. He was presented with the traditional ‘Chema Changphu’ as artistes from the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) sang their welcome to him on his birthday. He took his seat below the temple at the head of the courtyard with members of his family sitting directly behind him and members of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), past and present, behind him on either side.

The moderator disclosed that the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister was expected to join the gathering as the Chief Guest. In the meantime, she announced that Sikyong Penpa Tsering would raise the Tibetan flag while TIPA musicians led a rendition of the Tibetan national anthem. The public joined in and His Holiness raised his hand in salutation. The Indian national anthem was sung immediately following this, and once again His Holiness raised his hand in salutation.

The moderator invited the Sikyong, Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament in exile and the Justice Commissioner to make a mandala offering to His Holiness. A decorated sponge cake was presented to him and His Holiness cut it. Slices were distributed among the guests while the congregation sang ‘Happy Birthday to you’.

In his speech to mark the occasion the Sikyong mentioned that His Holiness’s vision is of value to the whole of humanity. Seeking to highlight what His Holiness has achieved on a global level he touched on the large number of countries he has visited around the world, some of them many times, sharing his thoughts about cultivating universal responsibility and developing a good heart.

The Sikyong noted that in connection with Tibet His Holiness first presented the Five Point Peace Plan in the US Congress and elaborated on his vision for a Middle Way Approach at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Penpa Tsering also remarked that His Holiness’s own curiosity and interest in science had been the starting point for a dialogue between Buddhist scholar-adepts and scientists that included 35 meetings of the Mind & Life Institute. In this context, he observed, His Holiness has emphasised that a compassionate motivation should be the cornerstone of any scientific research to ensure its results not become a cause of harm to sentient beings or the environment.

The Sikyong entreated Tibetans to consider it their sacred duty to work towards the realisation of His Holiness’s vision, to set aside divisive regionalism and sectarianism and reinforce unity among the Tibetan people.
