Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – Oggi è il giorno della luna piena, il giorno principale, di Saga Dawa, il quarto mese del calendario lunare tibetano, quando i tibetani ricordano la nascita e l’illuminazione del Buddha Shakyamuni. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha raggiunto a piedi dalla sua residenza lo Tsuglagkhang, il tempio tibetano principale, per conferire un insegnamento celebrativo. Mentre avanzava al centro del cortile del tempio, si spostava da una parte all’altra per salutare le persone lì riunite.

Raggiunto il tempio, ha salutato un gruppo di monaci Theravada che avevano preso posto alla destra del trono e nella prima fila dei monaci. Dai gradini del trono, Sua Santità ha innalzato le mani giunte per rendere omaggio al Buddha e si è raccolto in silenziosa preghiera. Quindi, mentre prendeva posto, veniva recitato in tibetano il “Sutra del cuore”, seguito da un’offerta del mandala e venivano quindi serviti tè e pane.

“Oggi, miei fratelli e sorelle di Dharma”, ha esordito Sua Santità, “è il giorno in cui, noi seguaci del Buddha, ricordiamo il conseguimento dell’illuminazione da parte del Buddha.

“Come è detto, ‘I Saggi non lavano via le azioni non salutari con l’acqua, né rimuovono le sofferenze degli esseri con le loro mani. Né trapiantano la propria realizzazione negli altri. È insegnando la verità della vacuità che liberano gli esseri.’

“Motivato dalla compassione, l’intenzione del Buddha era di insegnare a condurre gli esseri senzienti fuori dalla sofferenza. Per molti eoni ha pensato di beneficiare gli esseri senzienti ed alla fine ha conseguito l’illuminazione. Ha insegnato che la sofferenza deriva da cause e condizioni. Quelle cause e condizioni non sono correlate ad un agente esterno, come un dio creatore, ma si verificano a causa delle menti indisciplinate degli esseri senzienti. Poiché tendiamo ad essere sopraffatti dall’attaccamento, dalla rabbia e dall’odio, ci impegniamo in azioni e creiamo karma, che dà origine alla sofferenza.

“Sebbene le cose siano semplicemente designate e non abbiano un’esistenza oggettiva od indipendente, sembrano esistere dal loro lato e noi ci aggrappiamo a quell’apparenza di esistenza indipendente. Vale a dire, ci aggrappiamo ad una visione distorta.

Per aiutare gli esseri a chiarire questa visione distorta, il Buddha insegnò le Quattro Nobili Verità: che la sofferenza deve essere conosciuta e le sue cause sradicate, la cessazione deve essere attualizzata coltivando il sentiero. Read the rest of this entry »

June 4, 2023. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – Today is the full-moon day, the principal day, of Saga Dawa, the fourth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, when Tibetans remember the birth and enlightenment of Buddha Shakyamuni. His Holiness the Dalai Lama walked from the gates to his residence to the Tsuglagkhang, the Main Tibetan Temple, to give a teaching by way of celebration. As he made his way up the middle of the temple courtyard, he walked from side to side to greet and wave to people gathered there.

Reaching the temple, he greeted a group of Theravada monks who were seated to the right of the throne and in the front row of monks before it. From the steps to the throne, His Holiness raised his folded hands to pay his respects to the Buddha and paused a moment in silent prayer. The ‘Heart Sutra’ was recited in Tibetan as he took his seat, followed by a mandala offering. Tea and bread were served.

“Today, my Dharma brothers and sisters,” His Holiness began, “is when we followers of the Buddha remember the Buddha’s attaining enlightenment.

“As it is said, ‘the Sages do not wash unwholesome deeds away with water, nor do they remove the sufferings of beings with their hands. Neither do they transplant their own realization into others. It is by teaching the truth of suchness that they liberate beings.’ Read the rest of this entry »

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Il sorgere dipendente definisce l’insegnamento del Buddha. Tutto è dipendente. Niente è indipendente. Le cose sorgono in dipendenza da altri fattori. Poiché nulla è indipendente, tutto avviene attraverso relazioni di dipendenza”.

2 giugno 2023. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – Questa mattina, nonostante il clima freddo ed umido fuori stagione, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha incontrato quasi 500 studenti che si sono recentemente diplomati o stanno attualmente studiando al Nalanda Masters Course, il corso per il diploma di Nalanda offerto dalla Tibet House, Nuova Delhi. Attualmente sono più di 4000 gli studenti di 98 paesi iscritti ai corsi tenuti da Geshé Dorji Damdul della Tibet House.

Il dottor Kaveri Gill ha presentato a Sua Santità gli studenti ed il personale della Tibet House, ringraziandolo per aver inviato loro un maestro di tale levatura come Gheshé Dorji Damdul. Quest’ultimo ha poi offerto a Sua Santità tre statue ed un poster incorniciato sui Corsi di Nalanda, esprimendo un sincero rispetto a Sua Santità, al Sikyong, a Penpa Tsering ed al vicepresidente della Tibet House, nonché all’ex ministro degli Esteri indiano, dottor Nirupama Rao.

“Siamo tutti tuoi studenti”, ha detto a Sua Santità. “Cerchiamo di imparare da te. Nel secolo scorso il Mahatma Gandhi era il campione della nonviolenza – ‘ahimsa’, ma nel secolo attuale Sua Santità è il campione della compassione – ‘karuna'”.

Ha reso omaggio a tutti coloro che hanno contribuito a creare i programmi della Tibet House ed ha menzionato in particolare Tempa Tsering, Jetsun Pema e Doboom Rinpoché. Ha anche riconosciuto che nulla sarebbe accaduto senza il generoso sostegno del Ministero della Cultura del governo indiano, cui ha espresso gratitudine.

“Stiamo cercando di portare avanti la fiaccola della compassione e della saggezza che Sua Santità ha tenuto alta promuovendo i valori umani fondamentali. Con l’aiuto di Telo Tulku abbiamo anche recentemente esteso le attività relative ai Corsi di Nalanda alle persone di lingua russa.

“È nostra speranza che l’etica universale venga adottata dalle Nazioni Unite. Preghiamo affinché i leader mondiali possano imparare da Sua Santità mentre miriamo a raggiungere la pace, la libertà e la sicurezza. His Holiness the Dalai Lama: “The essence of the Nalanda Tradition is not ritual and prayer but being able to transform the mind.

June 2, 2023. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – This morning, despite the continuing unseasonable cold and wet weather, His Holiness the Dalai Lama met with almost 500 students who have recently graduated from or are currently studying in the Nalanda Masters Course, the Nalanda Diploma Course or the Nalanda Diploma course offered by Tibet House, New Delhi. At present there are more than 4000 students from 98 countries enrolled in courses run by Geshé Dorji Damdul from Tibet House.

Dr Kaveri Gill introduced the students and staff of Tibet House to His Holiness and thanked him for sending them a teacher of such calibre as Geshé Dorji Damdul.

Geshé Dorji Damdul then offered three statues and a framed poster related to the Nalanda Courses to His Holiness. He expressed heartfelt respects to His Holiness, to the Sikyong, Penpa Tsering, and to Vice Chairperson of Tibet House, and former Indian Foreign Secretary, Dr Nirupama Rao.

“All of us are your students,” he told His Holiness. “We seek to learn from you. In the last century Mahatma Gandhi was the champion of non-violence—‘ahimsa’, but in the present century His Holiness, is the champion of compassion—‘karuna’.”

He paid tribute to everyone who has helped create the programmes at Tibet House and mentioned Tempa Tsering, Jetsun Pema and Doboom Rinpoché in particular. He also acknowledged that nothing would have taken place without the generous support of the Government of India’s Ministry of Culture and expressed gratitude.

“We are trying to carry forward the torch of compassion and wisdom that His Holiness has held high by promoting fundamental human values. With the help of Telo Tulku we have also recently extended activities related to the Nalanda Courses to Russian-speaking people.

“It is to our hope that universal ethics will be adopted by the United Nations. We pray that world leaders may learn from His Holiness as we aim to achieve peace, freedom and security. May the world continue to enjoy the sunlight of your leadership.”

Mr Deepesh Thakkar, Chief Coordinator of the Nalanda Courses, saluted the chief guests and explained that Tibet House had set up long, medium and short courses of six years, 14 months and one and a half months respectively, to suit their students’ needs. The first group to complete the Nalanda Masters’ six-year course have recently graduated.

Thakkar remarked that Geshé Dorji Damdul had been a guiding light. He noted that among the students there are twice as many women as men and the students’ ages range from 14 to 80 years old.

“We aim,” he asserted, “not to propagate Buddhism but to share the knowledge it vouchsafes to help as many people as possible to be happier, kinder human beings. We thank His Holiness from the bottom of our hearts and also express gratitude to the Tibetan people dedicated down the centuries to preserving the Nalanda Tradition. May 31, 2023. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP – This morning, because of the wet weather, His Holiness the Dalai Lama drove to the foot of the temple from where he took the lift to the upper floor. When he reached the throne in front of the statue of the Buddha, lay-people from the Dharamsala Buddhist Class were engaged in debate. The assembled school-children and other students recited the ‘Heart Sutra’ and the verses of salutation to the Buddha from Nagarjuna’s ‘Fundamental Wisdom’ and ‘Ornament for Clear Realization’.

“Today, I’m going to give the permission to practise Manjushri,” His Holiness announced, “the Bodhisattva who embodies wisdom and intelligence.

“When I was a child, probably three or four years old, I visited Kumbum Monastery, which was near where I lived. There was a golden reliquary commemorating Jé Tsongkhapa who was born in the vicinity. Jé Rinpoché is renowned as a great being blessed by Manjushri. He studied in monasteries of all the Tibetan traditions—Sakya, Nyingma, Kagyu and Kadam. As I said, he was born in Amdo and when I think about that, I reflect that I’m from there too.

“I remember seeing young monks prostrating before the reliquary and reciting Manjushri’s mantra, ‘Om a ra pa tsa na dhi’, and I remember saying it too. Doing this helps us increase our wisdom and intelligence, enabling us to see reality more clearly. When our minds are clear, we’re better able to use our natural intelligence.
