December 31, 2022. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – This morning at the Kalachakra Ground, as soon as His Holiness the Dalai Lama had taken his seat, a group of monastics and lay-people began to chant the ‘Heart Sutra’ in Chinese. Tea and bread were served and the day’s patrons offered a mandala and the threefold representation of the body, speech and mind of enlightenment to His Holiness.

“Here, on behalf of this great gathering of people,” His Holiness declared, “I’ve been requested to give a permission related to Arya Tara. As I have already made clear, this is a special place and the most important thing we can do here is to generate bodhichitta, aspiring to achieve full enlightenment in the interest of self and others. This is how we can make our lives meaningful.

“Tibetans have been cultivating bodhichitta since the time of the religious kings when Shantarakshita was invited to Tibet. If your mind is relaxed and at peace, as a result of developing the awakening mind of bodhichitta, you’ll find you enjoy good physical health and sound sleep. You’ll be happy day and night.

“Today, I’m going to give the permission of the 21 Taras, which is found in the Rinjung Gyatsa and Sukha Gyatsa collections. I received the Rinjung Gyatsa from Tagdag Rinpoché in Tibet among many other empowerments and transmissions. I don’t remember receiving the Sukha Gyatsa from him, but Kyabjé Trijang Rinpoché gave it to me later, after we’d come into exile.

“While I go through the preparatory rites, please pray to Arya Tara that the Dharma may flourish, that people may be well and that teachers and those gathered here may live long. Keep in mind that the longer you live, the greater will be your opportunity to accumulate merit. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Questa mattina, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è tornato per un secondo ciclo di insegnamenti al Kalachakra Ground, gremito all’inverosimile, con 50.000 persone all’interno ed altre 15.000 all’esterno che seguivano i lavori su grandi schermi, e 3000 stranieri provenienti da 80 paesi.

Dopo aver salutato la folla ed i lama anziani, Sua Santità ha preso posto sul trono. Un gruppo di bambini, studenti della scuola Root Institute, si è seduto davanti a lui ed ha recitato con fervore il “Sutra del cuore” in sanscrito. Nel frattempo, Ratö Khensur, Nicholas Vreeland, ha presentato a Sua Santità la prima copia di un libro appena pubblicato che contiene la biografia spirituale di Sua Santità composta dal compianto Ratö Khyongla Rinpoché.

Successivamente, otto rappresentanti del progetto “Flame of Hope” – cinque dal Giappone ed uno ciascuno dall’Austria, Israele e Stati Uniti – hanno offerto a Sua Santità una lanterna, che era stata accesa dalla fiamma della pace a Hiroshima. ‘Flame of Hope’ desidera cambiare il mondo accendendo la scintilla della speranza per la pace nei cuori dei bambini. Lavorando mano nella mano con leader spirituali ed altre persone interessate, Flame of Hope mira a diffondere questo desiderio in tutto il mondo. Il suo slogan è “Una terra, una preghiera, una fiamma”.

Dopo la distribuzione del tè e del pane, benedetti in quanto offerti ai Tre Gioielli e gustati, Sua Santità ha preso la parola.

“Oggi abbiamo una seconda occasione per tenere un discorso in questo luogo sacro, che è molto fortunato. Buddha Shakyamuni venne qui, camminò su questa terra e qui raggiunse l’illuminazione.

“Mi è stata offerta questa fiamma da Hiroshima, che è stato il primo luogo su cui è stata lanciata una bomba atomica e così tante persone sono morte. Sono stato lì, ho sentito parlare di coloro che sono morti ed ho incontrato dei sopravvissuti la cui salute era fragile. Pensando a tutti loro mi sentivo immensamente triste. Ho pensato a quanto sarebbe bello se il mondo fosse libero dalle armi nucleari, cosa per cui ho pregato profondamente.

“Anche adesso la guerra continua e le armi vengono usate da una parte contro l’altra. Sebbene le armi nucleari non siano state impiegate in guerre dopo i bombardamenti sul Giappone, troppi paesi desiderano possederle. December 30, 2022. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – This morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama returned to the Kalachakra Ground for a second round of teachings. The ground, filled to capacity, was packed with 50,000 people while there were another 15,000 outside following proceedings on large screens. Of these 65,000 people, 3000 were foreigners from 80 countries.

After he had waved to the crowd and saluted the senior lamas, His Holiness took his seat on the throne. A group of children, students of the Root Institute school, sat down before him and fervently recited the ‘Heart Sutra’ in Sanskrit. Meanwhile, Ratö Khensur, Nicholas Vreeland, presented His Holiness with the first copy of a newly published book that contains His Holiness’s spiritual biography composed by the late Ratö Khyongla Rinpoché.

Next, eight representatives—five from Japan and one each from Austria, Israel and the USA—of the project ‘Flame of Hope’ presented a lantern to His Holiness, the flame of which had been lit from the flame of peace in Hiroshima. ‘Flame of Hope’ wishes to change the world by lighting the spark of hope for peace in children’s hearts. Working hand in hand with spiritual leaders and other concerned persons, Flame of Hope aims to spread this wish around the world. Their slogan is One Earth—One Prayer—One Flame.

After tea and bread had been distributed, blessed by being offered to the Three Jewels, and enjoyed, His Holiness spoke.

“Today, we have a second opportunity to hold a discourse in this sacred place, which is most fortunate. Buddha Shakyamuni came, walked this land, and attained enlightenment here.

“I’ve been given this flame from Hiroshima, which was the first place on which an atomic bomb was dropped and so very many people perished. I’ve been there, heard about those who died and met survivors whose health was frail. Thinking of them all I felt immensely sad. I thought how good it would be if the world were free from nuclear weapons, which is something I have deeply prayed for.

“Even now war goes on and weapons are being used by one side against others. Although nuclear weapons have not been employed since the bombing of Japan, too many countries wish to possess them. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “La pratica della bodhichitta, dell’amorevole gentilezza, è l’essenza di tutti gli insegnamenti del Buddha. Con questa in mente dobbiamo ricordare che tutti gli 8 miliardi di esseri umani che vivono oggi desiderano essere felici ed evitare la sofferenza, il che ci rende tutti uguali.”

Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Questa mattina, sotto un cielo azzurro e limpido, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha percorso la breve distanza fino al Kalachakra Ground, sorridendo e salutando i sostenitori che si erano radunati su entrambi i lati della strada. Scendendo dal golf cart nella parte anteriore del palco, come è sua abitudine ha tenuto a salutare la folla di fronte, alla sua destra ed a sinistra. Quindi si voltò e salutò il Sakya Gongma Trichen, il Gaden Tri Rinpoché, così come lo Sharpa e il Jangtsé Chöjés, dopodiché salutò anche i Sakya Trizin prima di prendere posto sul trono.

I monaci Theravada, per lo più provenienti da due monasteri thailandesi, hanno cantato il “Karuniya Metta Sutta” in pali, le parole del Buddha sulla amorevole gentilezza, seguito da una recitazione delle “Tre pratiche continue” in tibetano e dalla distribuzione di tè e pane.

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama

Questa, la Sede dell’Illuminazione, è il più sacro dei siti associati al Buddha. Oggi ci troviamo in questo luogo molto speciale dove il Buddha conseguì l’illuminazione, dove sono convenuti Nagarjuna, Asangha e tutti i loro discepoli. Questo è un luogo molto speciale per le preghiere qui espresse. Bodhgaya è perciò il luogo davvero speciale per i Buddhisti. Ci troviamo qui insieme per l’insegnamento denominato il Commentario alla Mente dell’Illuminazione di Nagarjuna (jangchup semdrel). E Bodgaya è l’essenza dei luoghi buddhisti e l’essenza del Dharma. Altrove insegnò le Quattro Nobili Verità coi loro 16 aspetti e le Trentasette Armonie dell’Illuminazione, ma qui ci viene in mente l’essenza di tutti i suoi insegnamenti, che consiste nel disciplinare la mente a beneficio degli esseri senzienti infiniti come lo spazio. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – This morning, under a clear blue sky, His Holiness the Dalai Lama drove the short distance to the Kalachakra Ground, smiling and waving to well-wishers who had gathered on either side of the road. Climbing down from the golfcart at the front of the stage, he made a point of waving to the crowd in front and to his right and left as is his custom. Then he turned and greeted the Sakya Gongma Trichen, the Gaden Tri Rinpoché, as well as the Sharpa and Jangtsé Chöjés, following which he also saluted the Sakya Trizins before taking his seat on the throne.

To His Holiness’s left sat the Gaden Tripa, Sharpa Chöjé, and Jangtsé Chöjé; Ling Rinpoché, Kundeling Taktsak Jedrung Rinpoché; Jonang Gyaltsab; Kirti Rinpoché; the Abbot of Namgyal Monastery, Thomtog Rinpoché; Chökyi Nyima Rinpoché; Trulshik Rinpoché; Druk Jangtrul Rinpoché and others.

Theravada monks, mostly from two Thai monasteries, chanted the ‘Karuniya Metta Sutta’ in Pali—the Buddha’s words on loving kindness, which was followed by a recitation of ‘The Three Continuous Practices’ in Tibetan. Tea and bread were distributed.

“Today, in this special place where the Buddha attained enlightenment, I would like to hold a ceremony for generating the awakening mind of bodhichitta and taking the Bodhisattva Vows,” His Holiness declared. “This, the Seat of Enlightenment, is the most sacred of the sites associated with the Buddha. Elsewhere he taught the Four Noble Truths and the Thirty-seven Harmonies of Enlightenment, but here we are reminded of the essence of all his teachings, which is to discipline the mind for the benefit of sentient beings extensive as space. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Cerco ogni giorno di coltivare la mente del risveglio di bodhicitta e la comprensione della vacuità ed esorto anche voi nell’intento di coltivare uno stato d’animo altruistico.

Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Questa mattina, mentre il sole aleggiava nel cielo nebbioso sopra il Tempio della Mahabodhi, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama dal monastero tibetano di Gaden Phelgyeling ha raggiunto su una golf car il tempio tailandese di Wat-pa sorridendo e salutando con ampi cenni di mano la folta folla allineata lungo i margini della strada che lo riveriva porgendogli sciarpe di seta o fiori nelle mani giunte.

Sua Santità è stato accolto calorosamente dai monaci al tempio e scortato all’interno. Prima di prendere posto sul palco tra gli altri ospiti che includevano il Ven Dr Warakagoda Dhammasiddhi, Sakya Gongma Trichen Rinpoché e il Gaden Tri Rinpoché, è stato invitato a consacrare una statua del Buddha.

Alla recitazione delle preghiere buddiste di rifugio in pali, ha fatto seguito quella del “Sutra del Cuore” in tibetano.

Nel suo discorso di benvenuto, il Ven. Khensur Lobsang Gyaltsen ha innanzitutto reso omaggio ed espresso il suo apprezzamento a Sua Santità ed ai principali ospiti per la loro presenza. Ha spiegato che il programma quinquennale di scambio internazionale di bhikkhu in pali e sanscrito inaugurato oggi è stato organizzato in parziale adempimento all’impegno di Sua Santità di promuovere i valori umani, incoraggiare l’armonia tra le tradizioni religiose del mondo, garantire la tutela della cultura tibetana e stimolare una rinascita della consapevolezza dei valori dell’antica conoscenza indiana.

December 27, 2022. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – This morning, as the sun hung in the misty sky over the Mahabodhi Temple, His Holiness the Dalai Lama rode in a golfcart from Gaden Phelgyeling Tibetan Monastery to Wat-pa Thai Temple. He smiled and waved to people, who lined the way several rows deep, holding silk scarves, or flowers in their folded hands.

His Holiness was warmly welcomed by the monks at the temple and escorted inside. He was invited to consecrate a statue of the Buddha before taking his seat on the platform among other guests who included Ven Dr Warakagoda Dhammasiddhi, Sakya Gongma Trichen Rinpoché and the Gaden Tri Rinpoché.

Buddhist refuge prayers were chanted in Pali, followed by a recitation of the ‘Heart Sutra’ in Tibetan.

In his welcome address Ven Khensur Lobsang Gyaltsen first paid his respects and expressed his appreciation to His Holiness and the principal guests for their presence. He explained that the five-year Pali and Sanskrit International Bhikkhu Exchange Program being inaugurated today has been organized in partial fulfilment of His Holiness’s commitment to promote human values, to encourage harmony among the world’s religious traditions, to ensure the preservation of Tibetan culture and to prompt a revival of awareness of the value of ancient Indian knowledge.

“We are all followers of Buddha Shakyamuni,” he declared, “and bringing about world peace is our common goal. The program is intended to strengthen relationships between followers of the Pali and Sanskrit traditions, allowing them to learn about each other.“ Read the rest of this entry »

Giunto a Bodhgaya, ieri mattina 23 dicembre 2022, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha visitato il Tempio di Mahabodhi per rendere omaggio alla Sede dell’Illuminazione. Dal monastero tibetano, Gaden Phelgyeling, ha raggiunto l’ingresso principale a bordo di un golfcart dal quale ha potuto vedere facilmente i devoti che costeggiavano la strada e loro potevano vedere lui. È stato accolto dal segretario del Comitato di gestione del Tempio di Bodhgaya (BTMC), Nangzey Dorjee.

Mentre scendeva con cautela i gradini, Sua Santità di tanto in tanto alzava lo sguardo verso lo stupa in cima al tempio e pronunciava una preghiera silenziosa. In altri momenti ha abbassato lo sguardo verso l’albero della Bodhi sotto il quale sedeva il Buddha. Tra un momento e l’altro ha guardato alla sua destra ed alla sua sinistra, sorridendo e salutando la folla di persone che guardavano in alto nella speranza di catturare il suo sguardo.

Sua Santità si è inchinato e ha reso omaggio ai piedi dell’Albero della Bodhi e ha proceduto alla circumdeambulazione del tempio, salutando e sorridendo alle persone, giovani e anziane, che sbirciavano attraverso le ringhiere di pietra. Sul lato opposto del tempio Sua Santità è entrato nella cappella, ha reso omaggio e si è seduto davanti alla celebre statua del Buddha. Con lui c’erano monaci Theravada e monaci del monastero di Namgyal.

Mentre un monaco indiano appartenente al BTMC avvolgeva stole gialle di seta intorno alla statua simboleggianti un’offerta di vesti, Sua Santità ed i monaci di Namgyal hanno intonato preghiere che includevano: Le Tre Pratiche Continue; il Sutra del Cuore della Perfezione della Saggezza https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=6098; Elogio della Dipendenza; una Supplica ai Diciassette Maestri di Nalanda https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=9200, una Preghiera Ecumenica alle Tradizioni Buddhiste del Tibet; Versi di Auspicio collegati ai Tre Gioielli; e una preghiera per la lunga vita di Sua Santità https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=3208 composta dai suoi due Tutori.

La recita si è conclusa con diverse preghiere di dedica, tra cui:

Possa la sublime e preziosa bodhicitta

Sorgere dove non è ancora cresciuta;

Dove è cresciuta, possa non declinare

ma svilupparsi e fiorire sempre più.

Come risultato della venuta del Buddha nel mondo,

il suo insegnamento risplende come la luce del sole,

e coloro che lo custodiscono sono armoniosi come fratelli,

Che il suo insegnamento possa durare a lungo.

Uscendo dalla cappella, Sua Santità ha completato il circuito del tempio, ha salito i gradini fino al cancello e ha proseguito con il golfcart fino a Gaden Phelgyeling.

December 23, 2022. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Having arrived in Bodhgaya yesterday, this morning His Holiness the Dalai Lama made a visit to the Mahabodhi Temple to pay his respects at the Seat of Enlightenment. He drove from the Tibetan Monastery, Gaden Phelgyeling, to the main entrance in a golfcart from which he could easily see the devout who lined the street and they could see him. He was welcomed by the Secretary of the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC), Nangzey Dorjee.

As he carefully descended the steps, His Holiness occasionally glanced up at the Stupa on top of the temple and said a quiet prayer. At other moments he looked down to the Bodhi Tree beneath which the Buddha sat. In between times he looked to his right and his left, smiling and waving to the throngs of people gazing up in hope of catching his eye.

His Holiness bowed and paid his respects at the foot of the Bodhi Tree and proceeded to circumambulate the temple, waving and smiling at people, young and old, peering through the stone railings. On the far side of the temple His Holiness entered the chapel, paid his respects, and sat down before the renowned statue of the Buddha. With him were Theravada monks as well as monks from Namgyal Monastery.

While an Indian monk belonging to the BTMC wrapped silken yellow stoles around the statue in lieu of an offering of robes, His Holiness and the Namgyal monks chanted prayers that included: The Three Continuous Practices; the Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra; In Praise of Dependent Arising; a Supplication to the Seventeen Nalanda Masters; an Ecumenical Prayer to the Buddhist Traditions of Tibet; Verses of Auspiciousness Connected with the Three Jewels; and a prayer for His Holiness’s long life composed by his two Tutors.

The recitation was concluded with several dedication prayers including:

May the sublime precious bodhichitta
Arise where it has not yet grown;
Where it has grown, may it not decline
But develop and flourish.

As a result of the Buddha’s coming into the world,
His teaching shines as bright as sunlight,
And those who guard it are harmonious like siblings,
May his teaching endure for a long time.

Emerging from the chapel His Holiness completed the circuit of the temple, climbed the steps to the gate and drove in the golfcart back to Gaden Phelgyeling.

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Per controllare la rabbia e rimanere in pace, consiglio di familiarizzarsi con “karuna”, la compassione, quindi, quando sorgerà la rabbia, non ti assoggetterà.

21 dicembre 2022. Delhi, India – Questa mattina, mentre Sua Santità il Dalai Lama si è recato alla Salwan Public School di Gurugram, il tempo era freddo ed un po’ nebbioso. All’arrivo è stato accolto dal presidente del Salwan Education Trust, Sushil Dutt Salwan, che lo ha accompagnato nell’atrio della scuola. I presidi ed il personale di 58 scuole di tutta Gurugram hanno colto l’occasione per salutare Sua Santità mentre si gustava tè e biscotti.

Sua Santità si è avvicinato al palco allestito sotto una grande “shamiana” e si è seduto di fronte a circa 6000 studenti, insegnanti e genitori che erano venuti ad ascoltarlo, quindi Sushil Dutt Salwan gli ha porto il benvenuto a nome di tutti i presenti, ricordando che la connessione del Salwan Education Trust con Sua Santità è iniziata quando 24 anni fa ha visitato per la prima volta il loro campus di Rajendranagar ed ha notato il grande rispetto che il Trust nutre per il messaggio di amore e compassione di Sua Santità. Ha anche aggiunto che in quell’occasione Sua Santità aveva benedetto un alberello che ora è diventato un albero della Bodhi: un punto di riferimento significativo nel campus.

“La vita è apprendimento”, ha osservato Salwan, “ed è un onore per noi imparare da Sua Santità”.

“Fratelli e sorelle”, ha esordito Sua Santità. “Tutti gli otto miliardi di noi esseri umani in realtà sono fratelli e sorelle. Siamo nati allo stesso modo e quasi tutti siamo stati nutriti allo stesso modo dalle nostre madri. Alla fine tutti in questo mondo dipendono dal buon cuore.

“Da bambini giochiamo gli uni con gli altri senza riguardo per quale possa essere la nostra religione o nazionalità. Se i nostri compagni sorridono e giocano, siamo felici di giocare con loro. Questo perché, essenzialmente, siamo tutti uguali in quanto esseri umani. Tuttavia, l’istruzione tende ad insegnare a concentrarci sulle differenze superficiali tra di noi, che possono portare ad attriti e discriminazioni.

“L’India ha tradizioni di lunga data di ‘karuna’ e ‘ahimsa’: compassione e non violenza. Dobbiamo cercare di seguire questi valori umani fondamentali. Tigri e leoni hanno denti affilati ed artigli che indicano il loro bisogno di predare e mangiare altri animali, ma la forma umana suggerisce che siamo molto più inclini ad essere compassionevoli e a non fare del male. December 21, 2022. Delhi, India – This morning the weather was chilly and a little misty as His Holiness the Dalai Lama drove to the Salwan Public School in Gurugram. He was greeted on arrival by the Chairman of the Salwan Education Trust, Sushil Dutt Salwan, who escorted him into the school lobby. Principals and staff of 58 schools from across Gurugram took the opportunity to greet His Holiness while he enjoyed tea and biscuits.

His Holiness walked to the stage set up under a grand ‘shamiana’ and took his seat looking out over an estimated 6000 students, teachers and parents who had come to listen to him. Mr Salwan welcomed him on behalf of everyone present. He recalled that the Salwan Education Trust’s association with His Holiness began when he first visited their Rajendranagar Campus 24 years ago. He noted the great respect the Trust has for His Holiness’s message about our general need for love and compassion. He also mentioned that on that occasion His Holiness had blessed a sapling that has now grown into a Bodhi tree that is a significant landmark on the campus.

“Life is about learning,” Mr Salwan remarked, “and it’s an honour for us to learn from His Holiness.”

“Brothers and sisters,” His Holiness began. “All eight billion of us human beings actually are brothers and sisters. We’re born the same way and nearly all of us have been nurtured by our mothers in the same way. Ultimately everyone in this world depends on warm-heartedness.

“As children we play with each other with no regard for what our religion or nationality may be. If our companions smile and play, we’re happy to play with them. This is because, essentially, we are all the same as human beings. However, education tends to teach us to focus on superficial differences between us, which can lead to friction and discrimination.

“India has long-standing traditions of ‘karuna’ and ‘ahimsa’: compassion and doing no harm. We must try to follow these basic human values. Tigers and lions have sharp teeth and claws that indicate their need to prey on and eat other animals, but the human form suggests that we are much more inclined to being compassionate and not doing harm. From a biological point of view, we should be peaceful creatures.

“Since we survive in dependence on the kindness of others, we need to maintain a sense of ‘karuna’ and ‘ahimsa’ towards them. In the past, there has been too much violence because we have used our intelligence to develop weapons and make plans to destroy our neighbours. Read the rest of this entry »

9 dicembre 2022. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – Questa mattina più di 200 persone si sono riunite nella sala delle udienze del nuovo edificio della Biblioteca e degli Archivi del Dalai Lama per l’inaugurazione di una conferenza sul tema “SEE Learning®: A Worldwide Iniziativa per Educare il Cuore e la Mente.” Molti erano associati all’Emory Compassion Center ed al progetto di apprendimento sociale, emotivo ed etico sviluppato sotto gli auspici della Emory University di Atlanta, in Georgia. Altri sono coinvolti nell’implementazione del SEE Learning qui in India presso istituzioni come Tong-Len.

Quando Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è arrivato, ha salutato calorosamente gli ospiti sul podio. Tra loro c’erano il presidente e rettore della Emory University ed il direttore dell’Emory Compassion Center.

Jamphel Lhundup, segretario del Dalai Lama Trust, ha offerto alcune osservazioni introduttive. Ha dato il benvenuto a tutti i partecipanti alla conferenza ed a tutti gli ospiti. Ha ringraziato Sua Santità per aver preso parte all’incontro ed ha riconosciuto che i vari programmi che la conferenza avrebbe esplorato hanno avuto origine nei suoi sforzi per promuovere la compassione. Ha sottolineato che questa è stata la prima conferenza convocata nella Biblioteca ed Aarchivi del Dalai Lama, un’istituzione che ha lo scopo di preservare gli insegnamenti e l’eredità di Sua Santità e disponibile come risorsa per le generazioni future.

Il dottor Lobsang Tenzin Negi, direttore dell’Emory Compassion Center e moderatore dell’incontro, ha recitato un verso formale in tibetano ed in inglese in omaggio a Sua Santità. Lo ha ringraziato per la sua presenza oggi. Ha ricordato che Sua Santità ha sostenuto le relazioni con la Emory University sin dalla creazione della Emory-Tibet Partnership nel 1998. Il lavoro della partnership per sviluppare un’educazione del cuore e della mente riflette l’impegno di Sua Santità nella promozione dei valori umani. Ciò è culminato nel lancio del programma SEE Learning nel 2019. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – This morning more than 200 people gathered in the audience hall of the new Dalai Lama Library & Archive building for the inauguration of a conference on the theme “SEE Learning®: A Worldwide Initiative for Educating the Heart and Mind.” Many were associated with the Emory Compassion Center and the Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning project developed under the auspices of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Others are involved in the implementation of SEE Learning here in India at institutions such as Tong-Len.

When His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived, he greeted the guests on the podium warmly. Among them were the President and Provost of Emory University and the Director of the Emory Compassion Center.

Jamphel Lhundup, Secretary of the Dalai Lama Trust, offered some opening remarks. He welcomed everyone participating in the conference and all the guests. He thanked His Holiness for taking part in the gathering and acknowledged that the various programs the conference would explore originated in his efforts to promote compassion. He pointed out that this was the first conference to be convened in the Dalai Lama Library & Archive, an institution that is intended to preserve His Holiness’s teachings and legacy and serve as a resource for future generations.

Dr Lobsang Tenzin Negi, Director of the Emory Compassion Center and moderator of the meeting, recited a formal verse in Tibetan and English by way of tribute to His Holiness. He thanked him for his presence today. He recalled that His Holiness has supported relations with Emory University since the establishment of the Emory-Tibet Partnership in 1998. The partnership’s work to develop an education of heart and mind reflects His Holiness’s commitment to the promotion of human values. This has culminated in the launch of the SEE Learning program in 2019. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – Questa mattina allo Tsuglagkhang, il principale tempio tibetano, a Dharamsala, sono state fatte offerte e preghiere per la lunga vita di Sua Santità il Dalai Lama. Sua Santità è stato accolto alla soglia della sua residenza dal Ganden Tri Rinpoché e dagli Sharpa e Jangtsé Chöjés, che lo hanno scortato al tempio , ognuno di loro indossava il cappello giallo da pandit, mentre suonavano profondi corni e veniva cantato il mantra di Arya Tara ed hanno preso posto nel tempio. Al centro della prima fila, di fronte a Sua Santità, sedeva Ganden Tri Rinpoché. Alla sua sinistra v‘erano Jangtsé Chöjé e gli abati di Sera-mé, Drepung Loseling e Drepung Gomang. Alla sua destra sedevano Sharpa Chöjé e gli Abati di Ganden Shartsé, Ganden Jangtsé e Sera-jé. A loro si unì dentro ed intorno al tempio una congregazione di circa 4500 persone.

All’inizio c’è stata la recitazione delle “Nuvole di benedizioni d’ambrosia”, la preghiera composta da Trulshik Rinpoché che invoca la serie di vite di Avalokiteshvara in India e Tibet, culminate nella stirpe dei Dalai Lama.

“Oggi, i miei fratelli e sorelle del Dharma stanno offrendo una cerimonia di lunga vita a mio nome”, ha annunciato Sua Santità. “In questa occasione sono stati presi accordi dal monastero di Drepung Gomang e dal Lhadhen Chotrul Monlam Chenmo Trust. Ho deciso di portare con me questa fotografia della statua di Chenrezig Wati Sangpo che è nella mia residenza.

“Chenrezig o Avalokiteshvara è la divinità protettrice del Tibet e io sono chi ne riceve la benedizione. Prego ogni giorno questo Wati Sangpo. Come rappresentante del corpo, della parola e della mente di Avalokiteshvara, lavoro per soddisfare i suoi desideri. E continuerò a farlo per i prossimi decenni. Dato che oggi state facendo queste preghiere ed offerte per mio conto, e poiché Wati Sangpo è il mio rifugio e custode, ho portato qui con me questa sua fotografia.

“La statua principale di Lokeshvara si trova a Lhasa, ma a seguito di determinate circostanze questo Wati Sangpo è venuto a stare qui con me. Quando lo prego, sento che mi sorride. Sebbene non possa camminare o parlare, mi conferisce la sua benedizione e, come rappresentante di Chenrezig, sono determinato a soddisfare i suoi desideri.

“Oggi, laici e monaci tibetani celebrano questa cerimonia basata su Tara Bianca. Apprezzo la partecipazione sia di Drepung Gomang che del Lhadhen Chotrul Monlam Chenmo Trust.

“Il buddismo tibetano suscita ammirazione in tutto il mondo ed i monaci di Drepung Gomang hanno contribuito a questo. Poiché sono nato nell’Amdo, sento un legame con questo monastero. Voi avete preservato gli insegnamenti del Buddha attraverso lo studio e la pratica, non solo leggendoli e discutendoli, ma anche meditandoli interiormente. Vorrei invitare tutti i monaci di Ganden, Sera, Drepung e Tashi Lhunpo, così come i monaci e le monache dell’intera regione himalayana, a continuare il loro studi e la loro pratica. Vi sarò da guida per i prossimi 10-20 anni.

“Tenete presente il consiglio del Buddha di non accettare ciò che ha insegnato solo sulla base della fede, ma dopo averlo esaminato ed indagato col rigore che un orafo impiega quando prova la qualità dell’oro. Imparate ad identificare le emozioni distruttive e ad affrontarle. Adottate un approccio logico. Queste non sono solo parole vuote, perché gli ampi e profondi insegnamenti del Buddha possono portarci la pace della mente. Read the rest of this entry »

November 30, 2022. Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India – This morning offerings and prayers for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama were made at the Tsuglagkhang, the Main Tibetan Temple, in Dharamsala. His Holiness was met at the gate to his residence by the Ganden Tri Rinpoché and the Sharpa and Jangtsé Chöjés, who escorted him to the temple—each of them wearing his yellow pandit’s hat—while deep horns played and the mantra of Arya Tara was chanted. In the temple they took their seats. In the centre of the front row, facing His Holiness, sat Ganden Tri Rinpoché. To his left were the Jangtsé Chöjé and the Abbots of Sera-mé, Drepung Loseling, and Drepung Gomang. To his right sat the Sharpa Chöjé and the Abbots of Ganden Shartsé, Ganden Jangtsé and Sera-jé. They were joined in and around the temple by a congregation of about 4500.

To begin with there was a recitation of the ‘Clouds of Ambrosial Blessings’, the prayer composed by Trulshik Rinpoché that invokes the series of lives of Avalokiteshvara in India and Tibet, culminating in the line of Dalai Lamas.

“Today, my Dharma brothers and sisters are offering a long-life ceremony on my behalf,” His Holiness announced. “On this occasion arrangements have been made by Drepung Gomang Monastery and the Lhadhen Chotrul Monlam Chenmo Trust.
