Yoga appears to improve mood through increased activity of an amino acid neurotransmitter known to influence mood, anxiety, and sleep, a small randomized trial suggests.

Investigators found yoga was associated with improved mood and increased levels of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “È importante combinare l’educazione moderna, con i suoi obiettivi di sviluppo materiale, con l’antica comprensione indiana del funzionamento della mente e delle emozioni, permettendoci di affrontare le nostre emozioni distruttive e raggiungere la pace interiore”.

18 gennaio 2020. Patna, Bihar, India – Ieri mattina, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha fatto una visita d’addio al Mahabodhi Stupa. Centinaia di persone si sono allineate lungo la strada per salutarlo mentre si dirigeva verso il santuario interiore, dove ha trascorso diversi minuti a pregare davanti alla venerata statua del Buddha. Dopo un breve volo da Gaya a Patna, Sua Santità incontrato il Primo Ministro del Bihar, Nitish Kumar, nella sua residenza che, prima di invitarlo a unirsi a lui per pranzo, ha chiesto a Sua Santità di benedire un albero della Bodhi nel giardino della sua residenza.

Questa mattina, Sua Santità ha raggiunto l’Accademia Giudiziaria del Bihar dove gli era stato chiesto di parlare dell’amore e della compassione come stile di vita. Qui è stato accolto dal Giudice Capo e dai Giudici dell’Alta Corte di Patna e, prima di entrare nell’edificio, ha piantò un albero nel giardino. Nella sua introduzione, il Giudice Capo Sanjay Karol ha dichiarato: “Ci sono persone che sono vicine ai nostri cuori e alle nostre menti, che non hanno bisogno di presentazioni. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è uno di questi, universalmente riconosciuto come un uomo di pace, che si definisce un semplice monaco buddista. “

“Rispettati fratelli e sorelle”, ha iniziato Sua Santità, “siamo tutti uguali. Tutti i 7 miliardi di esseri umani sono fratelli e sorelle. January 18, 2020. Patna, Bihar, India – Yesterday morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama paid a farewell visit to the Mahabodhi Stupa. Hundreds of people lined the road to catch a glimpse of him as he made his way to the inner sanctum where he spent several minutes praying before the revered statue of the Buddha. After a short flight from Gaya to Patna, His Holiness drove directly to meet Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, at his residence. The Chief Minister requested His Holiness to bless a bodhi tree in the garden of his residence, before inviting him to join him for lunch. In the afternoon, His Holiness took a short drive to the state guesthouse, where he retired for the day.

This morning, His Holiness drove to the Bihar Judicial Academy where he had been asked to talk about Love and Compassion as a Way of Life. He was welcomed by the Chief Justice and Judges of the Patna High Court and planted a sapling in the garden before entering the building. In his introduction Chief Justice Sanjay Karol declared, “There are those who are close to our hearts and minds, who do not need any introduction. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is such a man, universally recognized as a man of peace, who describes himself as a simple Buddhist monk.”

“Respected brothers and sisters,” His Holiness began, “we are all the same. All 7 billion human beings are brothers and sisters. Unfortunately, today, there is too much emphasis on seeing others in terms of ‘us’ and ‘them’ – highlighting differences of religion and nationality, and within one country the differences between the rich and poor. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Dobbiamo imparare l’uso della non violenza così come lo fece Gandhi-ji. I problemi devono essere risolti attraverso il dialogo, adottando un approccio non violento. Questa è la tradizione di lunga data dell’India. I grandi pensatori del passato come Mahavira e Buddha Sakyamuni sostenevano le antiche tradizioni indiane di “ahimsa” e “karuna”. Queste qualità sono molto rilevanti nel mondo d’oggi”.

14 gennaio 2020. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Oggi è un’altra mattina fredda e nebbiosa a Bodhgaya quando Sua Santità il Dalai Lama copre un breve tragitto in auto verso l’Indian Institute of Management (IIM) nel campus della Magadh University. Qui è stato ricevuto dalla direttrice, la dott.ssa Vinita Sahay, e dai suoi colleghi, che lo hanno invitato prima di tutto a piantare un albero per commemorare la sua visita. Davanti ad un pubblico di 180 studenti, docenti ed ospiti invitati seduti in un’area esterna chiusa, Sua Santità è stato formalmente accolto da uno degli studenti, che ha riassunto i suoi quattro impegni. Gli è stato quindi offerto uno scialle, un segno tradizionale di stima. Ha quindi pubblicato un libro di souvenir sull’Istituto. Firmando la prima copia, Sua Santità ha scritto: “La conoscenza unita alla compassione porta al progresso”.

Nelle sue osservazioni iniziali, la dott.ssa Vinita Sahay ha osservato che l’Istituto è ancora relativamente giovane, essendo stato promosso dal Ministero dello sviluppo delle risorse umane nel 2015. Ha osservato che ciascuno dei 20 IIM in India hanno una propria identità distinta. Ha descritto Sua Santità come il portatore di un messaggio di pace, non violenza, dialogo interreligioso, responsabilità universale e compassione. Ha aggiunto che, mentre l’India diventa un attore sempre più importante nell’economia globale, l’IIM di Bodhgaya sta lavorando per espandere il pool di talenti manageriali che saranno necessari in futuro. Ha definito l’istruzione come uno strumento per cambiare il mondo e raggiungere progressi sostenibili. January 14, 2020. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – It was another chilly, foggy Bodhgaya morning today as His Holiness the Dalai Lama took a short drive to the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) on the campus of Magadh University. He was received by the Director, Dr Vinita Sahay, and her colleagues, who invited him first of all to plant a sapling to commemorate his visit. Before a gathering of 180 students, faculty and invited guests seated in an enclosed outdoor area, His Holiness was formally welcomed by one of the students, who summarized his four commitments. He was offered a shawl, a traditional token of esteem. He then released a souvenir book about the Institute. Signing the first copy, His Holiness wrote: “Knowledge combined with compassion leads to progress”.

In her opening remarks, Dr Vinita Sahay noted that the Institute is still relatively young, having been launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2015. She observed that each of the 20 IIMs in India has its own distinct identity. She described His Holiness as someone who conveys a message of peace, non-violence, religious understanding, universal responsibility and compassion. She revealed that as India becomes an increasingly important player in the global economy, IIM Bodhgaya is working to expand the pool of managerial talent that will be needed in the future. She defined education as a tool for changing the world and achieving sustainable progress. She remarked that in today’s frenetic world, practices like mindfulness are very valuable. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Le cose sono transitorie. Dopo essere stati insieme è nella natura delle cose che ci disperdiamo. Non vi dimenticherò. Vi penserò. A vostra volta, non pensate solo al fatto che siamo stati qui fisicamente insieme, pensate al fatto che io vi abbia impartito degli insegnamenti, questi sono la base per trasformarvi. Tuttavia, dovete anche essere pratici e ricordare che la trasformazione non avviene immediatamente. Ci vuole tempo: settimane, mesi e anni di pratica. Tenetelo a mente e praticate bene.”

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama Conclude il ciclo di insegnamenti su Manjushri

6 gennaio 2020. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Questa mattina, nell’ultimo giorno dell’attuale serie di insegnamenti di Sua Santità il Dalai Lama, il cielo era blu ed il sole brillava gaio e rendeva scintillanti gli ornamenti dorati sul tetto di Ganden Phelgyeling mentre tramontava oltre il Kalachakra Ground. Come è solito fare, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha salutato quanti più devoti e membri del pubblico ha potuto raggiungere. Ha parlato con alcuni, ha salutato molti ed ha sorriso a tutti. Quando raggiunse il palco, un secondo gruppo dei più qualificati nelle competizioni di memorizzazione e composizione poetica dell’India meridionale si radunarono per farsi fotografare con lui.

Guardando dal palcoscenico il pubblico, si affacciava una marea di volti sorridenti illuminati dal sole e quando Sua Santità ha salutato dando il buongiorno, migliaia di mani si sono levate in cielo per salutare. Sua Santit è quindi salito sul trono, ha salutato le immagini del Buddha e dei grandi maestri e si è seduto. Manjushri Cycle of Teachings Concludes

January 6, 2020. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – This morning, on the final day of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s current series of teachings, the sky was blue and the sun glinted off the golden ornaments on the roof of Ganden Phelgyeling as he set out for the Kalachakra Ground. As is his wont, he greeted as many devotees and members of the public as he could on the way. He spoke to some, waved to many and smiled at them all. When he reached the stage a second group of those who came top in competitions in memorization and poetic composition in South India were gathered to have their photograph taken with him.

From the front of the stage the audience presented a sea of sunlit smiling faces and when His Holiness waved good morning, thousands of hands reached into the air to wave back. He then climbed onto the throne, saluted images of the Buddha and other great teachers and sat down. Immediately, the chant-masters, who have been serving the Great Prayer Festival for the last several days, launched into a stirring rendition of the ‘Heart Sutra’ in Tibetan. Nel divino Pakistan. Un team di archeologi italiani sta riportando alla luce i tesori della valle dello Swat. Dove duemila anni fa le religioni si arricchivano a vicenda. Magicamente.

Pubblico l’articolo uscito il 3 gennaio 2020 su Il Venerdì de la Repubblica. Riguarda gli scavi archeologici nello Swat, l’antica Uddiyana (nella mia foto) dove nacquero molti maestri della tradizione Vajrayana del Tibet, come Padmasambhava e Garab Dorje. Dallo Swat proveniva anche uno dei Re Magi della leggenda cristiana….Un grazie di cuore all’archeologo Luca Maria Olivieri e alla storica dell’Arte Anna Filigenzi, per il loro aiuto, nonché alla professoressa Giacomella Orofino per avermeli presentati.

Mingora (valle dello Swat) – pressappoco quando in Europa venivano fondati i primi conventi e borghi benedettini, i monaci orientali buddhisti del 500-600 d.C. praticavano l’ora et labora meditando e amministrando campi e canali d’irrigazione. Nelle fertili vallate del fiume Swat lungo la Via della Seta, incastonate tra i contrafforti dell’Hindukush nell’attuale Pakistan nord occidentale, ricevevano le decime su raccolti e armenti dai braccianti e pastori del circondario dell’antica città oggi chiamata Barikot e di altri borghi dove si produceva e distillava anche il vino forse sotto la loro diretta supervisione.
Grazie alle loro capacità manageriali e all’ordine mantenuto con la mitezza, i benedettini d’Asia godevano da secoli di uno speciale status presso chiunque si trovasse a governare, dai greci di Alessandro il Grande che più di 2300 anni fa sostituirono i persiani Achemenidi, ai Saka, i Kushana e i Sassanidi, perfino i temuti “Unni bianchi”. Poi l’Islam si insedio’ nell’anno 1000 con una dinastia giunta da Ghazni in Afghanistan, preparando la strada che portò cinque secoli dopo all’arrivo della grande tribù pashtun degli Yusufzai della quale fa parte il premio Nobel per la Pace Malala, nata e cresciuta a Mingora fino all’attentato dei talebani di sette anni fa. Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Coltivare bodhicitta con coraggio ed un senso di gioia interiore ti apporterà felicità momentanea e duratura. Di vita in vita sii determinato ad aiutare gli esseri senzienti. Sii per loro fonte di sostentamento come lo sono la terra, l’acqua, il fuoco, il vento, le erbe e le foreste selvagge. Iniziazione di Jetsunma Nakmo

5 gennaio 2020. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Stamattina camminando dal monastero di Gandel Phelgyeling fino al Kalachakra Ground, Sua Santità il Dalai Lama si è fermato regolarmente per interagire con le persone lungo il percorso. Sembrava attratto dai molti coi loro volti sorridenti e le mani giunte, ma ha anche raggiunto i bambini, gli uomini e le donne anziani e le persone che offrono statue per la benedizione. Quando raggiunse il palco, rimase in piedi per farsi fotografare con un gruppo di monaci e monache, che si sono cclassificati tra i migliori in un concorso di memorizzazione tenuto per celebrare il 600° anniversario dell’illuminazione e della morte di Jé Tsongkhapa. Oggi, dieci monaci birmani hanno condotto una recita del “Mangala Sutta” https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=1868 in Pali. Un gruppo di monaci e laici russi, molti dei quali provenienti da Tuva, hanno declamato il “Sutra del cuore” https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=6098 in russo, cui ha fatto seguito un gruppo misto di monaci e laici che di nuovo lo hanno cantato in inglese.

Sua Santità ha annunciato che oggi, dal ciclo Manjushri, avrebbe dato l’Iniziazione di una divinità chiamata Jetsunma Nakmo. Jetsunma Nakmo Permission

January 5, 2020. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Walking from Ganden Phelgyeling Monastery to the Kalachakra Ground this morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama stopped regularly to engage with people standing by the way. He seemed drawn to many by their smiling faces and folded hands, but he also reached out to children, elderly men and women and people holding statues for blessing. When he reached the stage, he stood to have his photograph taken with a group of monks and nuns, who came top in a memorization competition held to celebrate the 600th anniversary of Jé Tsongkhapa’s enlightenment and passing away. Today, ten Burmese monks conducted a recitation from the ‘Mangala Sutta’ in Pali. A group of monastics and laypeople from Russia, several of them from Tuva, declaimed the ‘Heart Sutra’ in Russian, and were followed by a mixed group of monastics and laypeople who chanted it again in English.

His Holiness announced that today, from the Manjushri Cycle, he was going to give the permission of a deity called Jetsunma Nakmo. He suggested that while he undertook the preparatory procedures, the audience could recite the ‘Mig-tse-ma’ prayer. Before beginning the rite of permission, he asked everyone to recite the ‘Twenty-one Praises to Tara’.

He declared that the first step was to take the bodhisattva vows. “I’ve already explained generating the awakening mind of bodhichitta and taking the bodhisattva vows over the last couple of days,” he said. “Bodhisattvas out of compassion observe sentient beings. They have the courage and determination to liberate beings across the expanse of space from suffering and bring them happiness, finally leading them to Buddhahood. Read the rest of this entry »

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “I sutra ed i tantra chiariscono che la principale causa di infelicità è l’egocentrismo, specialmente se combinato con l’idea sbagliata che persone e fenomeni siano intrinsecamente esistenti. Per contrastare queste tendenze, ci rifugiamo nel Buddha e seguiamo ciò che è stato rivelato anche da Manjushri, Nagarjuna e dai suoi discepoli, ma anche da Maitreya, che conseguirono l’illuminazione prendendo a cuore ciò che il Buddha insegnò. Questo ci rende suoi studenti, quindi dobbiamo studiare.”

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama Riprende il Ciclo di Insegnamenti di Manjushri

4 gennaio 2020. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Il freddo è tornato a far da padrone a Bodhgaya ed una forte nebbia è sospesa nell’aria mentre questa mattina Sua Santità il Dalai Lama è diretto verso il Kalachakra Ground. Come è sua abitudine, s’è impegnato faccia a faccia con il maggior numero di persone possibile tra coloro che hanno seguito il suo percorso. Dal palco ha salutato il pubblico e che ha risposto calorosamente al saluto. Ha quindi salutato vari lama ed altri ospiti prima di salire sul trono. Prima di sedersi, ha reso omaggio agli innumerevoli dipinti sacri appesi dietro ed intorno al palco.

Otto monaci del Royal Thai Monastery, guidati dal loro abate, l’anziano Thai Elder in India, hanno preso immediatamente posto davanti al trono per recitare una parte del Mangala Sutta https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=1868 in Pali. Sono stati seguiti da un gruppo di dieci monaci, monache e laici, dal Giappone che hanno cantato il “Sutra del cuore” https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=6098 in giapponese. Dopo di loro hanno presenziato undici mongoli: monaci, una monaca e laici che hanno di nuovo cantato il “Il Cuore della Saggezza” in mongolo.

“Questi insegnamenti ci arrivano da Lama Umapa, Pawo Dorjé, che, anche da ragazzo quando allevava pecore, ha avuto visioni di Manjushri. Ho ricevuto la trasmissione da Tagdrak Rinpoché. ‘Omaggio a Manjushri, dall’aspetto giovanile, la cui brillante saggezza dissipa l’oscurità dei tre mondi.’ Questo non si riferisce all’oscurità fisica, ma all’ignoranza. Manjushri Cycle of Teachings Resumes

January 4, 2020. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – The weather over Bodhgaya turned cold again and a heavy mist hung in the air as His Holiness the Dalai Lama made his way to the Kalachakra Ground this morning. As is his custom, he took time to engage eye to eye with as many people as he could among those who lined his path. From the stage he waved to the audience and they waved back. He greeted various Lamas and other guests before climbing onto the throne. Before sitting down, he acknowledged the array of sacred paintings hung behind and around the stage.

Eight monks from the Royal Thai Monastery, led by their Abbot who is the senior Thai Elder in India, lost no time in taking their seats before the throne and reciting a section of the Mangala Sutta in Pali. They were followed by a group of ten, monks, nuns and laypeople, from Japan who chanted the ‘Heart Sutra’ in Japanese. After them came eleven Mongolians, monks, a nun and laypeople who chanted the ‘Heart of Wisdom’ again in Mongolian.

“Today, tomorrow and the day after,” His Holiness announced, “I’ll be giving permissions from the Manjushri Cycle of Teachings that we started last year. I hope to give what remains of the cycle this time. Read the rest of this entry »

Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – La luce dorata del sole è scesa sul Mahabodhi Stupa mentre Sua Santità il Dalai Lama ha lasciato stamattina il monastero di Ganden Phelgyeling per il Kalachakra Ground. Mentre camminava dal cancello al palco, si è fermato spesso a sorridere e salutare i gruppi di persone che si erano radunati per vederlo. Dal palco poteva vedere la folla fino alle pareti lungo i bordi e salutava tutti, a partire dai lama attorno al trono, ma ha anche prestato attenzione ai monaci anziani ed ai giovani tulku prima di sedersi.

Una dozzina di monaci e monache vietnamiti hanno cantato il “Sutra del Cuore” https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=6098 nella loro lingua madre. Sono stati seguiti da dieci monaci del monastero buddista del Bangladesh che hanno recitavato il Mangala Sutta https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=1868 in Pali. Un terzo gruppo, che ha recitato ancora una volta il “Sutra del cuore”, era composto da monaci e monache coreane. I membri di una famiglia che sponsorizzavano gli eventi odierni hanno offerto un mandala ed una triplice rappresentazione del corpo, della parola e della mente del Buddha.

Avalokiteshvara Empowerment

January 3, 2020 Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Golden sunlight streamed over the Mahabodhi Stupa as His Holiness the Dalai Lama left Ganden Phelgyeling Monastery for the Kalachakra Ground this morning. As he walked from the gate to the stage he halted frequently to smile and wave to groups of people who had gathered to see him. From the stage he could see the crowd right up to the walls around the edge and waved to them all. He greeted the notable Lamas around the throne, but also paid attention to elderly monks and young tulkus before taking his seat.

A dozen Vietnamese monks and nuns chanted the ‘Heart Sutra’ https://www.sangye.it/altro/?p=8419 earnestly in their native tongue. They were followed by ten monks from the Bangladesh Buddhist Monastery who recited the Mangala Sutta in Pali. A third group, who recited the ‘Heart Sutra’ once more, consisted of Korean nuns and monks. Members of a family sponsoring today’s events offered a mandala and threefold representations of the Buddha’s body, speech and mind.

“Today, since I’m going to give an Avalokiteshvara empowerment,” His Holiness advised, “while I complete the preparatory rituals, it would be good if all of you recited the six-syllable mantra, Om mani padme hung.” Read the rest of this entry »

Sua Santità il Dalai Lama: “Se scambi i tuoi interessi con quelli degli altri e li ami, tutto appare in una luce positiva. Avrai buona salute, vivrai a lungo ed intorno a te radunerai molti amici”.

Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – Dopo diversi giorni di clima freddo e nebbioso in tutta l’India del Nord, le prospettive di questa mattina sembravano più favorevoli mentre Sua Santità il Dalai Lama s’incamminava dal monastero tibetano, Ganden Phelgyeling, fino al Kalachakra Ground. Gli abati dei Monasteri di Ganden Shartsé e Jangtsé ed il Disciplinario del Monastero di Namgyal hanno aperto la strada indossando i loro cappelli a cresta gialli e portando l’incenso. Sua Santità mentre percorreva la strada ha salutato le persone schierate su entrambi i lati. Circa 35.000 persone, monaci tibetani, monache, laici, persone provenienti dalle regioni dell’Himalaya e 2500 da 67 altri paesi erano in attesa sul terreno. Sua Santità, mentre saliva sul palco, sorrise loro, fece un cenno a tutti ed allungò la mano verso il maggior numero possibile di persone. E, dal palco, lì salutò con la mano quelli che erano più lontani.

Tra i lama seduti intorno al trono ha salutato Sakya Trizin, il detentore del trono Ganden ed il suo predecessore Rizong Rinpoché ed il nuovo Khambo Lama di Tuva.

Appena Sua Santità si sedette sul trono, otto monaci, indiani e srilankesi, del comitato di gestione del tempio di Bodhgaya, iniziarono a recitare in Pali la sezione del “Mangala Sutta” che riguarda l’amorevole gentilezza, a cui ha fatto seguito un gruppo di undici studenti della locale scuola Maitreya associata al Root Institute, che hanno cantato il “Sutra del cuore” in sanscrito cantilenato. Thirty-seven Practices of Bodhisattvas

January 2, 2020. Bodhgaya, Bihar, India – After several days of cold and foggy weather across North India, the prospects this morning seemed brighter as His Holiness the Dalai Lama walked from the Tibetan Monastery, Ganden Phelgyeling, to the Kalachakra Ground. The Abbots of Ganden Shartsé and Jangtsé Monasteries and the Disciplinarian of Namgyal Monastery led the way wearing their yellow crested hats and carrying incense. His Holiness greeted people lined up on either side as he crossed the road. An estimated 35,000 people, Tibetan monks, nuns and laypeople, people from the Himalayan regions and 2500 from 67 other countries were gathered on the Ground. His Holiness smiled, waved and reached out to as many as he could as he walked to the stage. From there he waved to those who were further away.

Among the Lamas seated around the throne he greeted Sakya Trizin, the Ganden Throne-holder and his predecessor Rizong Rinpoché and the new Khambo Lama of Tuva.

As soon as His Holiness had sat down on the throne, eight monks, Indians and Sri Lankans, from the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee, began a recitation in Pali of the section of the ‘Mangala Sutta’ that concerns loving kindness. They were followed by a group of eleven students from the local Maitreya School associated with Root Institute, who chanted the ‘Heart Sutra’ in mellifluous Sanskrit.

Lastly, a group of Chinese, including monks, a nun and laypeople recited the ‘Heart Sutra’ once more in Mandarin.
