Leaving Bylakuppe for Bangalore

Bangalore, Karnataka. India, 4 December 2014 – After ten days teaching the Stages to the Path to Enlightenment and meeting many people individually and in groups, all of which went smoothly and without obstacle, the time came for His Holiness the Dalai Lama to leave Bylakuppe. He came down to the prayer hall of Sera Jey Monastery, made prayers and saluted the images of enlightened beings. Monks, who had worked as volunteers during the gathering of more than 30,000 people, formed a corridor down the centre of the hall. The Gelugpa hierarchs and an assembly of abbots from Bylakuppe and beyond were there to see him off. Ling Rinpoche, who had requested the teachings, was at the door of His Holiness’s car.
As His Holiness’s motorcade made its way through the settlement the road was lined with Tibetans from all walks of life, young, old, lay and monastic, with katas, flowers or incense in their hands. Read the rest of this entry »

Final Day of Teachings at Sera Jey

Bylakuppe, Karnataka, India, 3 January 2014 – It was chilly and dark when His Holiness the Dalai Lama emerged from Sera Jey Monastery this morning to take the short walk to the teaching ground. Even at that early hour the path was lined with smiling faces as he made his way to begin rituals in preparation for an Avalokiteshvara empowerment. He had instructed that while he was doing that, monks should engage in debate, which they did with gusto.

When he was ready to teach, he began, saying: “Our incomparable teacher, the Lion of the Shakyas, appeared in this world 2600 year ago. I’d like to report a conversation I had once in Amritsar at an inter-religious gathering that sets what the Buddha taught in context with other religious traditions. A Sufi scholar – Sufis are Muslim mystics who emphasise love and compassion – told us that all religions seek to answer three questions: what is the self? Does it have beginning and does it have an end? Read the rest of this entry »

Bylakuppe, Karnataka, India, 2 January 2014 – In addition to his public activities, such as the Lam Rim teachings he has been giving, His Holiness the Dalai Lama also meets with people before, in between and sometimes even after the teaching sessions. These may be groups from different places or individual monks and Lamas. Today, for example, before coming to the teaching ground, he met a group of more than a hundred Indian neo-Buddhists and a group of Bhutanese. In both cases he stressed what he often says elsewhere that one of the principal aims of Buddhism is the transformation of our disturbing emotions. To achieve this simple faith is not enough. What 21st century Buddhists need to do is study, which means reading or listening to teachings and thinking about them until you understand them. Both groups took avid interest in his advice. Seventh Day of Lam Rim Teachings at Sera Jey

Bylakuppe, Karnataka, India, 31 December 2013 – For the past week His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been staying at Sera Mey, but teaching every day at Sera Jey. Every day he’s made a short drive between the two colleges. This morning he drove out of Sera Mey in the opposite direction and out onto a plain earth track that brought him to the new Sera Mey Retreat Centre. He had been invited to inaugurate the facility, which consists of a small, simple temple and a collection of retreat houses. He cut the ribbon on the temple door, opened it, entered and paid his respects before taking his seat. He said:

“I appreciate what you’re doing here. One of the Sera Mey disciplinarians asked me if Sera Mey could introduce a period of silent meditation during the morning prayers every day. I recalled that Phabongka Rinpoche had a custom of keeping a period of silence at the point in the sadhana where you take the three bodies into the path, Read the rest of this entry »
