Read the rest of this entry »

Self immolations of tibetans are now 100.

Self immolations of tibetans are now 100.

Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay Appeal to Tibetans Not to Celebrate Losar

Press Release
With profound grief, I report that the number of Tibetans who have set themselves on fire to protest against repression in Tibet is now reaching
100. In 2012 alone, 83 Tibetans self-immolated, and twenty-eight of these occurred within the single month of November.

Now in the new year of 2013, I am saddened to inform you that three Tibetans have set themselves on fire. The most recent self-immolation by Kunchok Kyab, 26 years old, occurred just a few days ago. Given this continuing tragic situation, I request my fellow Tibetans to not celebrate Losar (Tibetan New Year) with our usual festivities. Instead, when this year’s holiday falls on February 11, I ask you to perform only the customary religious rituals like visiting temples and making offerings. Do wear our traditional robe (Chuba) to display our identity and tradition. Kindly pray for all who have sacrificed their lives and for all who continue to suffer in occupied Tibet. When he entered the hall where he was invited to speak, the audience were again welcoming in a way that seemed not just curious, but genuinely pleased to see him. In his brief words of introduction, Fr Frazer said, “We share in the Jesuit tradition. We strive not only for academic excellence, but also to enrich the heart and spirit. We are grateful to see you here, for you are one of the few people alive today who are like a conscience for the world. We believe you have a message for the twenty-first century.” Read the rest of this entry »

L’educazione patriottica cinese, di Leone Grotti. Tempi – 17 gennaio 2013

Drepung Lachi, Mundgod, Karnataka, India, 18 January 2013 – After yesterday’s Introduction, today was dedicated to Physics, specifically Quantum Physics. Before Arthur Zajonc began to speak about the Implications of Quantum Mechanics for Our View of Reality, moderator John Durant gently warned that quantum mechanics are not easy. “Yesterday we talked about classical science, but 120 years ago, having worked hard and given great thought to physics, physicists felt they had reached the end. Kelvin said, ‘We understand everything except for a couple of small clouds on the horizon.’”These two clouds were the colour of candlelight, which defied attempts using classical physics to predict it, and the discovery that light, unlike sound, passes through space without the medium of air.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama Completes his Series of Teachings in Sarnath

Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India, 10 January 2013 – The weather was milder and the sky was blue for the first time in the morning since he arrived in Sarnath, as His Holiness the Dalai Lama made his way early to the teaching pavilion. He spent an hour performing the preparatory rites for the Avalokiteshvara empowerment he was going to give. Following the recitation of the Mangala Sutta in Pali, the Heart Sutra was recited in Russian.

Today, here in this sacred place, is the last day of the teachings,” he said. “Vasubhandu has divided the Buddha’s teaching into the scriptural and the experiential. And we’ll be able to preserve it if we engage in study and practice, which involves hearing the teaching explained and thinking it over again and again, then meditating on what you’ve understood.” Read the rest of this entry »

Third Day of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Teachings in Sarnath

Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India, 9 January 2013 – This morning the Sri Lankan bhikkhus’ chanting of the Mangala Sutra in Pali was followed by three recitations of the Heart Sutra. The first was in Japanese, the second was a poignant chant by monks in Vietnamese, and finally there was a straightforward reading in English. His Holiness the Dalai Lama then began without further ado: “In order to overcome ignorance, which is the root of all suffering, we need to understand reality. Nagarjuna praises the Buddha for revealing the unmistaken view that enables us to do that.”  He went on to clarify that if we are ignorant of the alphabet in general and some letters in particular, we will not overcome this ignorance by prayer, or by meditation on compassion or deities, nor by performing prostrations. His Holiness the Dalai Lama Continues to Teach Shantideva’s Text in Sarnath

Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India 8 January 2013 – As the cold weather eased this morning, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was received with warm smiles at the teaching ground by an audience of nearly 6000: approximately 2000 monks and nuns; 800 from the Himalayan regions; 2500 from the Tibetan public; 96 registered members of the media and 650 foreigners from 33 different countries. His Holiness began by explaining the context for what he is doing: “I’m explaining this text in Tibetan, but prior to that today we are reciting sutras in Pali, Chinese and Korean – and I hope there will be recitations in Japanese and other languages in the next two days. What this shows is that Buddhism spread to countries with different languages, among which are those, mostly in the south, that depend on scriptures written in Pali and others, mostly in the north, that depend on scriptures that originated in Sanskrit. His Holiness the Dalai Lama Commences Teaching Shantideva’s Text in Sarnath

Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India, 7 January 2013, Yesterday, His Holiness travelled from Patna to Sarnath outside Varanasi, where he is to teach Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life. Sarnath, like much of North India, is in the grip of an intense cold wave and many in the audience waiting for His Holiness this morning were wrapped up warm against it. As he made his way to the throne he greeted many old friends, among them the Jangtse Choje, Lobsang Tenzin.

A group of Theravada monks were invited to recite the Mangala Sutra in Pali, followed by a recitation of the Heart Sutra in Sanskrit by students of the Central University for Tibetan Studies, which is co-host to these teachings. His Holiness pointed out that while the Pali and Sanskrit traditions of Buddhism have the Monastic Discipline or Vinaya in common, Tibetan Buddhism seems to be the only tradition to employ logic.

Ripetere l’esercizio. Read the rest of this entry »

On this special episode of Your Call I am joined by a very special guest, the one man who can perhaps give us some sense of peace as we try to comprehend the brutal happenings around us, the Dalai Lama. It’s a time when in India there is a great sense of grief and anger because of what happened to a young girl. What would your message be Your Holiness, at a time like this?

Dalai Lama: Of course, firstly, such incidents are really very sad, very sad. Now India is a huge country and with long history. I think a very civilized culture heritage. His Holiness the Dalai Lama attends an International Buddhist Sangha Conference

Patna, Bihar, India, 6 January 2013 – This morning His Holiness the Dalai Lama met a group of more than 200 Vietnamese, monks, nuns and lay-people. In his advice to them he began by clarifying what it means to be a Buddhist today: “Just putting on yellow robes and shaving your head is not sufficient to consider yourself a Buddhist. Even repeating the formula for taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha by itself is not sufficient. What we have to know is what the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha are.”

He explained that the Buddha is not like a god, permanent and absolute from the start. He was also a sentient being like us who became purified and accomplished through steady practice. He showed us how to purify and train our minds and transform them from being under the sway of destructive emotions to the fully purified omniscient state of a Buddha. Read the rest of this entry »

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the Bihar Chief Minister’s Guest in Patna

Patna, Bihar, India, 4 January 2013 – On arrival in the ancient Indian city of Patna yesterday, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was warmly welcomed at the airport by the Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He was then driven a short distance to the State Guest House, where he retired for the night.
Patna, capital of modern Bihar state, is regarded as one of the longest inhabited places in the world. It first gained significance when the Magadhan King, Ajatashatru, a contemporary of the Buddha, shifted his capital here from Rajgir. Two centuries later, the great Mauryan Emperor, Ashoka, who in his maturity embraced and fostered Buddhism and who became the first ruler of a largely united India, made his capital here. The present government of Bihar, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has taken an active interest in Patna’s and Bihar’s Buddhist heritage and in May 2010 invited His Holiness to inaugurate the Buddha Smirti Park.
